Raja’s Seat

It is a viewpoint in the village in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka, India. Its full name is Rajas Seat, which means it's the king's seat. According to the folklore, Kodava kings used to come to this place and spend time gazing at such natural beauty in the adjacent valley and hills. It has a scenic view of a wider view of the lush green, coffee plantations, and the Western Ghats. This place is also very much renowned for its sunsets as extremely beautiful. It is one of the favourite places among tourists and nature lovers. Rajas Seat, Coorg, Madikeri: Historical importance like a palace retreat. "Rajas Seat" literally means "Seat of the King." It was to that place where the rulers of Coorg used to sit and enjoy the natural splendour of that region's encircling valleys, hillocks, and forests. It has been selected by the rulers to have a serene ambience and a relatively more soothing climate so for some summertime retreat into this place. The site began in the 19th century, with a pavilion erected for the kings to sit and enjoy the sunsets and beauty in the scene. But the pavilion does not exist anymore; the place still attracts visitors owing to its historical importance and spectacular view. This was a place that the Kodava kings used as their abode not only to spend their leisure but also to hold royal get-together ceremonies, celebrations, and sometimes even to find time to think over.

Today, it has transformed into a tourism site in Coorg where the eye can catch views of vistas of surroundings with dense coffee plantations and the Western Ghats  being panoramic. During all this, the heritage remains  as this once royal place of Coorg reminds its visitors of the glory with the charm, peace, and importance  it holds as an ultimate place to connect oneself to nature. In the 19th century, a small pavilion erected by the Kodagu kings lived  as the symbol of the location. It's such a beautiful place , though, that one cannot think about missing visiting Coorg. The best time to visit is from the cooler months of October through March, though the rain-soaked landscape has an enchanting, misty atmosphere for those who cherish it. Whatever the season is, Rajas Seat offers a magical escape into the beauty and tranquillity of Coorg. The best time to visit Rajas Seat in Coorg is in winter when the weather is cool and pleasant. It is quite suitable to look and enjoy the beauty of the place between 15°C and 30°C. The lush green and misty land in the monsoon period (June to September) makes some rain showers for a view. Summer from April to June is very warm , with temperatures crossing 30°C-35°C, so outside activities are not enjoyable. Winter and Monsoon months are the best for an experience worthwhile.

  • By Train: The nearest railway station to Rajas Seat is Madikeri, though not a major railhead. The better-connected station is Mysore Railway Station, located around 120 km from Madikeri. You can hire a taxi or bus from Mysore to reach Madikeri. 

  • By Road: Madikeri is well-connected by road with all of Karnataka's major cities. It's about 120 kilometres from Mysore and 250 kilometres from Bangalore. Access to Madikeri comes through the following ways. 

  • By Bus: To reach Madikeri, KSRTC provides regular bus services between major cities like  Mysore, Bangalore, and Mangalore . Take a taxi or drive a vehicle through this scenic route with the backdrop of the Western Ghats.
