About Kumara Parvatha Trek, Coorg:
Kumara Parvatha Trekking can be one of the most rewarding treks a trekker can embark on. Boasting challenging gradients and stunning Western Ghat views, this trek will test both your physical and mental limits while helping you grow both personally and physically stronger. Kukke Subramanya, home of the revered Kumara Parvatha temple, marks the starting point of this trail with its small gate and board marking its starting point. From here, it progressively becomes steeper as one progresses on this trek. After traversing through the initial forest section, you will reach a rest stop known as Bhattar Mane or Bhatta's House for refreshments and snacks. Here, it is important to hydrate and recharge before continuing up towards Shesha Parvatha, before ascending the final stretch of mountain terrain. As soon as you reach the summit of Kumara Parvatha, take in its breathtaking panoramas from up top. Take some time to soak in this experience before beginning to descend the mountain; don't forget to visit the shrine on top if desired and offer your prayers as well! Kumara Parvatha should be hiked during post-monsoon and winter months from October to February, when the Western Ghats come alive with lush vegetation, vibrant streams & waterfalls, and rejuvenated streams & waterfalls.

The Kumara Parvata trek, nestled in the heart of the Western Ghats in Karnataka, is a popular adventure destination for trekking enthusiasts. Known for its breathtaking views, lush greenery, and the challenge it presents to trekkers, this is one trek you don’t want to miss.
Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a beginner looking to push your limits, Kumara Parvata offers an experience like no other. But what makes this trek so special, and why should you consider adding it to your bucket list? Let’s explore.
Kumara Parvata, also known as Pushpagiri, is located in the Coorg district of Karnataka. It stands tall at 1,712 meters (5,617 feet) above sea level, making it the second-highest peak in the state. The trek starts from a small village called Bidalli, and from there, trekkers ascend the forest trails, passing through dense woods and scenic valleys, all the way to the summit.
To reach the base camp, you will typically travel to Bangalore or Mangalore, both of which are well-connected by road. From Bangalore, it’s about a 5-6 hour drive to the base camp.
The ideal time to trek Kumara Parvata is during the post-monsoon and winter seasons, from October to March. The weather during these months is perfect for trekking, with cool temperatures and clear skies that offer panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
During the monsoon season (June to September), the trail can become slippery and challenging, making it unsafe for trekkers. It’s best to avoid the trek during this period unless you're an experienced trekker who enjoys the challenge of trekking in the rain.
The Kumara Parvata trek is considered to be moderately difficult, making it suitable for those who have prior trekking experience. However, it’s also doable for first-timers who are physically fit and prepared for the challenge. The trek involves steep climbs, narrow paths, and rocky sections that require a good level of endurance and stamina.
What makes the trek particularly challenging is the fact that it’s a long hike with an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters. But the rewards of reaching the summit, with its panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats, are well worth the effort.
The Kumara Parvata trek typically takes two days. Here’s how your trek would generally be split:
Day 1: Reach the base camp in the morning and start your ascent. You’ll trek through dense forests, cross streams, and tackle steep inclines before reaching the first campsite at about 1,500 meters.
Day 2: Early morning, continue the trek to the summit. After reaching the top, spend some time soaking in the views before descending back to the base camp.
If you're in a rush, it’s possible to complete the trek in one day, though it would be quite strenuous.
There are two main routes to reach the summit of Kumara Parvata: the Pushpagiri route and the Somwarpet route.
Pushpagiri route: This is the more popular and scenic route, starting from the village of Bidalli. It offers a great combination of forest trails, streams, and beautiful views.
Somwarpet route: This route starts from the town of Somwarpet, but it's less frequented and can be a bit more challenging due to its rough terrain.
While the Pushpagiri route is more well-known, the Somwarpet route is ideal for those looking for a less crowded and more adventurous path.
Scenic Views: As you ascend, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the Western Ghats. The misty valleys, distant hills, and the dense forests are mesmerizing, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Flora and Fauna: The trek is home to diverse wildlife, including langurs, malabar giant squirrels, and various bird species. The lush vegetation is equally stunning, with towering trees and vibrant flora throughout the journey.
Here’s a list of essential items to bring along for the trek:
Trekking shoes (good grip and waterproof)
Clothing (lightweight, moisture-wicking, and breathable clothes)
Backpack (with a rain cover)
Water bottles and hydration packs
First aid kit
Food and snacks (energy bars, nuts, fruits)
Headlamp or flashlight
Warm layers (jackets for nighttime)
Safety should be your top priority. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth trek:
Trek in groups: Always go with a group, especially if you're a beginner.
Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration.
Watch your step: The terrain can be tricky, especially during the rainy season, so be cautious on slippery sections.
The trek does not require any special permits, but it’s important to register at the local forest department. Respect the regulations set by the authorities to help preserve the environment and wildlife in the region.
While Kumara Parvata itself is a major attraction, there are several other points of interest nearby, such as:
Bhagamandala Temple: A historic temple located near the trek base.
Dubare Elephant Camp: A short drive away, where you can interact with elephants.
Preparation is key! To complete the Kumara Parvata trek successfully, it’s essential to be in good physical condition. Focus on endurance exercises like running, cycling, and walking on inclines. Yoga and stretching can help with flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries.
While there aren’t many places to stay directly on the trail, you can find accommodations in nearby towns such as Somwarpet or Coorg. Budget-friendly options like homestays, guesthouses, and hotels are available.
The Kumara Parvata trek offers an unforgettable adventure for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts. From the challenging ascents to the stunning views from the summit, it’s an experience that will leave you in awe. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or an exciting physical challenge, Kumara Parvata is worth the effort. So, lace up your boots and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime! For those who want to make this experience even more special, consider booking your trip with escapes2explore. They offer organised treks that ensure a hassle-free and memorable adventure.
