LENGTH OF PAMBAR RIVER:

The Pambar River, located in the southern part of India, is approximately 64 kilometers (about 40 miles) long. It originates from the Western Ghats, flowing through the Tamil Nadu state before merging with the Kottakudi River. The river is significant for its ecological diversity, supporting various flora and fauna along its banks. Its watershed is crucial for local agriculture and serves as a vital water source for nearby communities. The Pambar is also known for its picturesque landscapes, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and tourists seeking to explore the natural beauty of the region.

STORY/HISTORY OF PAMBAR FALLS:

Pambar Falls in Kodaikanal is an idyllic waterfall located in the middle of lush greenery. Located far away from the clutter and clamour of the cities, Pambar Falls offers you a perfect getaway spot to let your senses wander in the soothing comfort of nature and get a much-needed reset. Formed as a result of the community water reservoir overflowing southwards to join the Vaigai River in its course, the zigzagging stream dances over a series of rock formations, making a stunning cascading waterfall, giving it the name Grand Cascade. Also known as the Liril or Vattakanal Falls, it is located just 3 km away from the centre of Kodaikanal.

A short walk from the Kodaikanal town centre to Pambar House will take you to a winding trail into the nearby woods. The trek to Pambar Falls itself is as beautiful as the majestic waterfalls. Traversing the slippery rocks and thick undergrowth of the woods will take you further into the rugged terrain. The Waterfall presents itself as a relatively peaceful brook flowing through the thickets. Venture further upstream, and your perseverance will be rewarded with a stunning view of a majestic waterfall. The trek over the rugged terrain will be made more accessible by the songs and dances of the countless birds and butterflies in the woods. The trek through the pristine landscape, enjoying the raw beauty of nature, will be a refreshing experience for travellers.

Pambar Falls

At a distance of 4 km from Kodaikanal Bus Station. This magnificent fall is also popularly called the 'Grand Cascade.' The town water reservoir overflows southwards, forming the Fairy Falls, which continues to join the Vaigai River, forming the Pambar Falls through its course.

A steep, slippery path behind Pambar's house can reach it. Racing down Pambar Ravine is the zigzagging Levinge stream that cascades over a series of rock formations. The Pambar Ravine showers down the Waterfall and a series of steep and precariously slippery rocks during its meandering course. There is a pond-like formation at the foot that is suitable for bathing. Three or four adjacent minor cascading falls can be seen as you go downstream. The wild vicinity of the falls flourishes in rare flora and fauna. Endemic birds and butterflies create a centre of attention in this soothing spot.

The thick canopy of the woods opens to the view of the bubbling water dancing over a series of rocky cliffs. The craggy landscape of the area makes the water tumble down a series of rocky steps, forming a beautiful cascading waterfall. Even though the rocks are too slippery to climb on, the Pambar Falls form a tub-like plunge pool at the bottom that makes a perfect spot to enjoy a refreshing swing after your exhausting trek. As the true beauty of the falls is revealed during and after the monsoon, September to May is the best time to visit Pambar Falls.

To reach the falls, you can trek through a steep path behind Pambar House. An experienced guide leads the trek, and some recommend bringing the following items:
