A Nature Lover’s Delight Located about 60 km from Munnar, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary stands as one of Kerala’s unique preserved forests. Stretching across 90 sq km on the eastern side of the Western Ghats, the Sanctuary is known for its unusual dry deciduous forest type with thorny scrubland and aromatic sandalwood instead of evergreen rainforests which are commonly found in Kerala. Guided tours in small groups organized by the Forest Department allow visitors to explore the thorny jungles and grasslands of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary under the guidance of trained guides and to learn about endemic flora and fauna. Located within the sanctuary, along the Pambar River, is the incredibly attractive Thoovanam Waterfalls which fall on an old tribal hamlet at the base surrounded by sandalwood trees. The best time for animal sighting is usually early mornings and late evenings. Visitors should carry a water bottle, sturdy trekking shoes, light colored clothes and binoculars.
