One of Darjeeling’s iconic and significant landmark, the Observatory Hill & Mahakal Temple combines spirituality, history and panoramic views of the Himalayas in an enchanting package. Situated right above the Chowrasta Mall, you’ll reach Observatory Hill through a short and easy uphill trek, taking a rather enchanting walkway along soaring pines and trinket shops. Incredibly unique, Mahakal Temple devoted to Lord Shiva is one of the only places in India, where both Hindu and Buddhist sentiments blend together perfectly. Devoted by both, the temple carries a deeply devotional and ethereal air, and reflects the multicultural nature of Darjeeling perfectly. The rhythmic tinkling of the bells, whispers of chants, fluttering prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels set the sacred mood and atmosphere. Traditionally believed to be the location of the famous Dorje Ling monastery, thus lent its name to Darjeeling, the monastery may no longer stand but its religious significance has endured. The top of Observatory Hill gives you commanding 360° views of the town, the adjoining valleys, surrounding forests and on clear days, a sweeping view of the Kanchenjunga. An absolutely great place for photographers and nature lovers especially during sunrises and sunsets. You may also find a family of monkeys visiting the temple frequently but it is advised to avoid exposing food around them. Visiting here during the day or evening is recommended to enjoy crystal clear views of the surrounding environs. Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple is just the right spot if you’re looking for some peace, enjoy historical marvels or want to gaze at awe-inspiring views of the Himalayas.
