Deep in the Western Ghats of Karnataka state lies the stunning peak mountain of Kodachadri, a serene fusion of nature marvel, adventure, and spirituality. Kodachadri, situated in Shimoga district, offers an elevation of approximately 1,343 meters (4,406 feet) and thus forms a part of one of the state's most prominent peaks. Local "Kodacha" and "Adri" have been used to derive the name "Kodachadri," which collectively depict 'Jasmine of the Hills' a fitting name for its serene and fragrant landscape. Kodachadri is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and an adventure sports destination. The climb to the top is one of the most scenic in the area, going through dense tropical forests, green pastures, lovely waterfalls, and misty paths. The walk, usually starting from the village of Nittur, is 10β14 km (one way) depending on the route. It's got all kinds of terrain gravel roads, jungle paths, and climbing ups on slopes so it's quite difficult but well worth every step.
The wildlife enthusiasts will see wildlife, multi-coloured flowers, and some of the more elusive birds in between, and thus the tour becomes all the more beautiful. Amongst its major attractions, the Sarvajna Peetha is a standout - a small stone temple at the top for Adi Shankaracharya, who allegedly meditated here. The top provides a bird's eye view of the Arabian Sea on clear mornings, and watching sunrises and sunsets becomes an almost otherworldly experience. Tourist destinations like Hidlumane Falls, Arasinagundi Falls, and the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary nearby are the charm of this place.
It is not only a dream destination for the trekkers but it's a land of history, steeped in myth and religious mythology. The hill is holy and of high regard in the Hindu spiritual heritage, especially in the tradition of Shankaracharya. Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century saint-philosopher and the mastermind behind the Hindu renaissance, it is said, rested at Kodachadri during his pilgrimages throughout the subcontinent. It was, as has been the tradition, at the pinnacle where he had meditated, and on which lies a tiny rock platform called the Sarvajna Peetha (Seat of Wisdom) representing his spiritual enlightenment and teaching. Its historical importance also derives from the fact that it is associated with the Mookambika Temple at Kollur, at the foot of Kodachadri.
It is believed that goddess Mookambika in her Shakti avatar defeated and slew the demon Mookasura here. The goddess is believed to emanate power everywhere on the mountain, which is a hallowed pilgrim centre. The pilgrims enjoy climbing Kodachadri from the most sacred temple, experiencing the climb as corporal as spiritual. It was included in the old Malnad country as well, which was known for dense woods, distinctive building architecture, and well-developed culture. The hill and country were initially owned by the Keladi Nayakas, who held parts of Karnataka during the post-Vijayanagara period. They were patrons of temples, patrons of arts, and followers of indigenous cultures. It was never a political centre, yet it remained always a location of extremely high rank due to its religious glow and Indigenous tradition.
