Udupi, a city teeming with the best of its heritage, is often called "the temple town of Karnataka." located on the sea, right at the Arabian Sea. The town of Udupi is an extraordinary ensemble of the time-honoured and the beauty of nature that has been its hallmark to date. Apart from the picturesque beaches, vibrant culture, and pure spirituality that it announces worldwide, Udupi is a perfect balancing act of both. One of the things that people talk about when they talk about Udupi is the absolutely unspoiled beaches. Only a short distance away is the Udupi of the Indian Ocean with the likes of Malpe, St. Mary Island, and Kapu, which have bright, turquoise waters and cool visitors. On the other hand, Udupi is not the place for calm water lovers alone. So, you can do all these water sports, trekking in the mountains, and go on a boat ride to a quiet island. Udupi is also the home of the globally known "Udupi cuisine" that has been a massive influence on the cooking styles of India and is an absolutely vegetarian style of cooking. Furthermore, the town is also related to the Yakshagana, a dance-drama that declaims the mythologies through gaudy costumes and vivacious performers.History of UdupiThe first is the history of Udupi, the town of spirituality, trading, and culture, over a thousand years ago. Most of Udupi’s fame was due to its association with the life of Sri Madhvacharya (1238–1317 CE), the great researcher and founder of the Dvaita (dualism) school of Vedanta, who not only taught but also built the temple. It is said that Madhva had located a Krishna idol that had been covered up by a lump of gopichandana and found on the beach. Hence, he performed the consecration and since then, Udupi has been the heart place of the Vaishnavism tradition of South India. Madhvacharya founded the Ashta Mathas (eight monasteries) for spreading his teachings. These mathas- Pejavara, Palimaru, Admaru, Puthige, Shirur, Sodhe, Kaniyooru, and Krishnapura- are those who are involved in the Paryaya event (a tradition that is continuing), where the Krishna Temple administration is handed over from one to another annually for the time being. In this manner, the religious legacy of Udupi has been there for more than 700 years and has made the town one of the most vibrant ones where the people of the Hindu faith do their religious performances. In the past, Udupi used to be a major medieval seaport town. Being on the Arabian Sea, it was able to do maritime trade with the places of the Middle East and Southeast Asia.Visiting Places in UdupiSri Krishna Temple: Along with being one of the most famous landmarks in Udupi, the Sri Krishna Temple is also a place of worship for ages.
