The Royal Legacy of Sudhagad Fort

The Royal Legacy of Sudhagad Fort

In the heart of the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, Sudhagad Fort Trek is a natural blend of nature, history, and sheer adventure. Located at Pali in Raigad district, Bhorapgad is an old fort that goes back its history to nearly 2,000 years ago and lies about 2,030 feet above sea level. Ancient erstwhile city of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, due to its strategic location and mighty fortifications, Sudhagad is laden with Maratha history and looks back into the past through its monolithic gateways, ancient temples, and destroyed defences. The climb to Sudhagad Fort is easier and therefore ideal for a training climb by beginners, kids, and seniors as well. The path winds its way through dense woods, meadows, and groups of boulders and is a 2-3 hour climb to the summit.

Trekkers like to have dense forest and wildlife, valleys, and unobstructed sight of nearby peaks such as Tailbaila, Sarasgad, and the huge Western Ghats' peaks in the distance. One of the most interesting parts of the trek is the Bhorai Devi temple at the summit, and still a worshipping place for the locals. The fort retains the remains of water tanks, bastions, and gigantic stone stairs and testifies to its age. Sudhagad offers enough flat area on top for all its trekkers and is therefore a perfect place to camp out in nature at night. Sudhagad is the friend of rain and winter, green in rain and blue sky, with the cold breeze in winter. For history lovers, nature lovers, or adventure hunters, the Sudhagad Fort Trek offers a satisfying and rewarding experience.

History of Sudhagad Fort trek

Sudhagad Fort, whose ancient name is Bhorapgad, occupies a historical and strategic position within Maharashtrian heritage. Its second iteration of the fort stretches back over 2,000 years and into the 2nd century BCE, and so it ranks among the Deccan's ancient hill forts. The earlier history is not so well documented, but would likely have been under the local dynasties before the larger kingdoms governed the Deccan. It was employed for defence at the local level in the Bahmani and Ahmadnagar Sultanates. But it came to be of immense significance in the 17th century when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj governed the Maratha Empire. Noticing its strategic location and natural defences, Shivaji bought the fort in 1657. Even though he considered it could be the capital of the Maratha Empire, but selected Raigad Fort for greater mobility.

Sudhagad Fort

Sudhagad was a look-out post fort and a look-out post for nearby trading routes and other similar strategic forts like Sarasgad, Tailbaila, and Korigad. The back-end of the Maratha war chain, it was a refuge, warehousing, and a look-out centre site. The fort was also spiritually significant as there was the Bhorai Devi Temple atop, which is still a place of pilgrimage. With the fall of the Maratha Empire and the advent of colonial rule by the British, Sudhagad lost its strategic significance as a base and lay waiting to be in ruins later. And today, Sudhagad remains a testimony to the Maratha architectural style and warfare, with cisterns, walls, and gates all intact. It has been restored as a heritage from ancient times and is visited by tourists in the guise of trekkers, historians, and nature lovers who want to behold a bit of Maharashtra's history.

Places to visit near Sudhagad Fort

  1. Pali Ballaleshwar Temple: It is one of the Ashtavinayak Lord Ganesha temples, which is situated under the Sudhagad Fort in Pali town. It is the Ballaleshwar. The temple is unique among all the other Ashtavinayak cult temples since the temple is where a name has been spoken to Lord Ganesha, holding him to his fan Ballal. The temple is an architectural wonder, a serene environment, and receives pilgrims all year round. It becomes a must-see for spiritual travellers and culture history lovers.

  2. Sarasgad Fort: Only a few kilometres short distance from Sudhagad is Sarasgad Fort, the second ancient wonder in the Pali region. A small but resilient fort of an extremely short trek with rock-held steps, bastions, and breathtaking views down into the valley floor. Old watchtower repurposed into a great alternative for short one-day treks and a photo stop.

  3. Tailbaila Cliffs: Among the most favourite adventure spots and rock climbing sites, Tailbaila is unique to the rest of its twin peaks, ascending vertically, that provide daring climbers from all over India with the excitement of climbing. Located at a distance of approximately 10 km from Sudhagad, it possesses extremely rocky lands, postcard-perfect landscapes, and the excitement of technical climb trails for serious adventurers.

  4. Korigad Fort: Near Lonavala and Amby Valley is Korigad, another good trek with easy access to Sudhagad. Known for its robust fort walls, well-maintained bastions, and serene temple at the top, Korigad is a combination of nature's beauty and history around it. The scenery from the top is just excellent during the monsoon.

Best Time to Visit Sudhagad Fort Trek

  • Monsoon Season (June to September): The monsoons are the optimum time to visit Sudhagad Fort, the prettiest of all. The entire landscape is a heaven of greens with waterfalls along the route and fog at the summit. The trek is a fantasy ride with a sunny day and flower-filled roads. The trails are slippery, but safety and good trekking shoes are advised. It's the optimal time for nature lovers and photographers.

  • Post-Monsoon / Winter Season (October to February): Maybe the best season in general to hike Sudhagad Fort. Good weather, lovely temperature (12°C to 28°C), and nature is also green after rain. Best time to hike, view, and camp on the top even. Good quality air and scenic views make this so popular among weekend hikers and pleasure-seekers alike.

  • Summer Season (March to May): Summertime would be all right to explore Sudhagad Fort, but the best period cannot be attributed to it, as it is scorching hot and dry. Daytime's maximum temperature will be approximately 35°C and even more, so trekking will be hot and tiring. Early morning leave will be wise if you take up this time as well, with proper provision of water. With or without vanishing greenery, view-finding surrounding hillocks is usually the best.

How to access Sudhagad Fort

  • By Road: Sudhagad Fort is accessible by road and accessible by private vehicle or state bus. Thakurwadi is the base village closest to the trek, around 11 km from Pali, a tourist town well known for the Ballaleshwar Ganpati temple. If you are coming down from Pune or Mumbai, travel on the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH66) and turn toward Khopoli or Nagothane, whichever is closer to you. Turn left after turning through the instructions for Pali and then Thakurwadi. There is sufficient parking space around and within the village, and the road itself is accessible to all classes of vehicles.

  • By Train: The nearest railway stations to Sudhagad Fort are Nagothane and Khopoli, well connected to Pune and Mumbai by regular trains. From either station, use a local taxi or bus to reach Pali and then proceed to Thakurwadi by private vehicle or auto-rickshaw. Even though the train journey is economical, there will be local transport arrangements necessary to reach the last leg to the base village, which will not always be as regular, so plan your journeys accordingly.

  • By Bus: Government buses are indeed available from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Panvel on daily schedules to Pali village. There are not many direct services, though, from Pali to Thakurwadi. You will most likely have to take a shared jeep or an auto-rickshaw from Pali to reach till the starting point of the trek. Booking of the local bus schedules beforehand, or even a booked car, is the best choice.
