Conquering Maharashtra's Highest Peak: Kalsubai
Kalsubai Trek is among the most popular and challenging treks of Maharashtra, renowned for leading your way to the highest peak of the state. The trek brings you to Mount Kalsubai, a 5,400 feet (1,646 meters) tall Ahmednagar district of the Western Ghats. The trek is a good blend of adventure, nature, and culture. The common name for Kalsubai is "Everest of Maharashtra," and many trekkers from all across the nation flock to it in search of a moderately tough but fulfilling trekking experience. Trekking starts from the hill station town of Bari, which is well connected by road with Pune and Mumbai. The trek is well-marked and consists of rocky patches, grassy meadows, and steep slopes with iron ladders for support against the rock face. Even though the ascent is gentle for novice climbers, the trek can be done with a proper guide and pace. Trekkers are finally rewarded with breathtaking views of the emerald Sahyadri hills, backwaters of Bhandardara and the encircling Alang, Madan, and Kulang fortresses on the trek. Among the trekking highlights is the highest temple of the Kalsubai Temple, which is dedicated to the local deity Kalsubai Devi. The locals also revere this peak as sacred and walk barefoot to pray there. June to February, during the monsoon and winter season, is best for the trek to Kalsubai, when the ground is rich green, the weather is pleasant, and the scenery is set aflame with mist and waterfalls. If you are an adventure traveller, a weekend trip traveller, or a nature traveller, then the Kalsubai trek has something awaiting you that will render lifelong memories. It is perfect for solo tourists, families, and even newbies to attempt the climb of the highest peak of Maharashtra.History of KalsubaiThe history of Kalsubai has much more relevance with the regional mythology and religion than with actual history. The summit has been sanctified to a virgin named Kalsubai, who is believed to have resided in a nearby village. She spent her days in myth in devotion, love, and healing skills. She, however, left under some injustice or ill-treatment accounts differ, abandoned to establish at the summit to live a life of solitude and pray. The people of the village started to revere her as a goddess once she had passed away, and a small shrine was constructed in her name at the top. The place became a pilgrimage centre, and the hill was nicknamed Kalsubai in her memory. The area surrounding Kalsubai was also tactically important in the past because it was close to several forts of the Marathas, such as Alang, Madan, Kulang, and Ratangad. These formed part of the military and defence of the Maratha Empire when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was in power. Although Kalsubai was not settled as a fort, its strategic location in the Sahyadri hills gave it a viewpoint as well as a natural watch tower. The climb to the summit has been traversed by locals and pilgrims for centuries, and its religious significance still attracts pilgrims, especially at the time of the Navratri festival, when hundreds of pilgrims climb to the peak to pay their respects at Kalsubai temple. And now, Kalsubai not only remains the state's highest place but also a beauty of nature and culture, a perfect amalgamation of mythology, spirituality, and trekking.Places to visit near KalsubaiBhandardara Dam and Lake: Located just a short drive from Bari village, Bhandardara is a serene hill station known for its pristine lake, lush greenery, and the majestic Wilson Dam. The terrain is thick with thick vegetation all around, new growth, gushing streams, and foggy valleys, and the whole trek is now filled with colours and photo-perfect. Although the trek becomes slippery and exhausting during rainy months, the ascent in clouds, crawling on small waterfalls, and feeling cold winds add a touch of nostalgia to the trek. The trekking boots should be of good quality, and caution must be exercised while climbing iron ladders during this period.Post-Monsoon Season (October to November): It could be the best time to ascend Kalsubai with sweet weather and the best conditions. Greens of monsoon still linger, and the trail becomes drier and firmer. The open vista of nearby Sahyadri ranges, fortresses, and Bhandardara backwaters appears crystal clear. This is the best time for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers ready to face the slippery slopes of the monsoon.Winter Season (December to February): The winter season is also ideal to complete the Kalsubai trek. It is warm and balmy weather, typically early morning and late evening. There is a clear sky, and one can witness a good sunrise and sunset view at the top. It is also a good time to organise night treks or camp near the base village. The trek is dry and safe, best for beginners and group treks.Do Not Go In Summer (March to May): Summer trekking is not advised because of the hot sun and dry weather.
