Discovering the Hidden World of Sandhan Valley

Sandhan Valley trek, or the Valley of Shadows, is nestled between Maharashtra's beautiful Sahyadri hill ranges and provides one of India's most exhilarating and unconventional trekking adventures. Standing tall at around 200 feet in height and extending over 2 kilometres, Sandhan Valley provides adventure, nature, and a raw, rough experience that no other trek can. Sandhan Valley Trek & Rappelling tour is a walk in the wilderness, but a thrill. History of Sandhan Valley (The Valley of Shadows)

Sandhan Valley in Maharashtra's Western Ghats, near Ratangad and Alang-Madan-Kulang (AMK) fort villages, is a naturally formed gorge by centuries of erosion by the wind and water on the Sahyadri mountains. Even though not historically linked to any great period or dynasty, the valley is in a region of Maharashtra, which was Maratha-rich in history and bordered on both sides by old forts, which were erstwhile invulnerable strongholds of the great Maratha emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The nearby Ratangad Fort is over 2,000 years old and was taken over by Shivaji in the 17th century. Sandhan Valley must have been a natural route or shelter for hillmen and soldiers because of its secluded and narrow nature. Its natural cover and inaccessibility made it the perfect shelter during war or traversing the mountains.

Sandhan Valley (The Valley of Shadows)

Years went by, and Sandhan Valley remained unknown to the general population, unpolluted by them because the landscape was not traversable and entry to it was impossible. It is only when adventure tourism had become a popular imagination factor in Maharashtra, that trekkers and adventure seekers ever "rediscovered" Sandhan Valley as a tourist place. Now, even though there are no old temples and inscriptions anywhere within the valley, its geographical proximity to ancient forts and villages of bygone days draws it into the larger canvas of Maharashtra's rich martial and cultural heritage. Even the valley itself is a natural monument, timeless, unsoiled, and imposing, which attracts not just adventure tourists but also those who want to discover old landscapes etched long before man's own story became a story.

It is more than 2,000 years old and was conquered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and transformed into a strategic fort because of the commanding view of the surrounding Sahyadris. The fort contains natural rock outcrops, the notorious Nedhe (natural rock hole or cave) and presents scenic panoramas over backwaters and nearby peaks of Bhandardara.

  2. Bhandardara: Peaceful hill station Bhandardara, 30 km from Sandhan Valley, is surrounded by blue lakes, green forests, and falling waterfalls. It is the work of Arthur Lake, Randha Falls, and the Wilson Dam, one of the oldest dams in India. The spot is the best place for boating, camping, and rejuvenation after a long trek in the valley. Bhandardara's climate and natural beauty have made it one of the best weekend spots from Mumbai and Pune.

  3. Alang-Madan-Kulang (AMK) Forts: The Kulang, Alang, and Madan AMK forts are the toughest Sahyadri treks and are located near Sandhan Valley. The forts are famous for their hilltop locations, cliff faces, and wide views. They were a part of the Maratha defence line and feature ancient cisterns, caves, and ruins of fort walls. The treks are not recommended for inexperienced trekkers and are generally attempted as a duo along with the Sandhan Valley trek.

  4. Kalsubai Peak: The Kalsubai Peak, located about 50 km away from Sandhan Valley, rises to a height of 5,400 feet and is the highest among all in Maharashtra. Adventure trekking lovers like it due to the ease of access and the wide scenic view from the top. Best time to visit Sandhan Valley

Water levels inside the valley are low, and coming down is safe and easy. Open sky allows a wide bird's eye view of the surrounding Sahyadri ranges and open skies for night camping. It offers the largest number of adventure seekers and trekkers owing to good weather and landscapes.

  • Post-Monsoon Season (September to October): If you like dense greens and landscapes, the post-monsoon season is the best time to go. After the monsoon rain showers, the valley is attired in a water paradise of waterfalls, flowing streams, and misty cliffs. The ground remains slippery and some of the water pools can be deeper, so one needs to be cautious. But the landscapes are in their best camera-friendly configuration, and the places to observe are truly heavenly for nature photographers and photographers.

  • Monsoon Season (June to August): Sandhan Valley trekking is not advised during the monsoon season because it is not safe. Flash floods in the valley occur due to rain, and the trail is slippery and risky. Rock descending and rappelling are quite dangerous because waterlogging and visibility are poor. Most trekking operators do not advise booking tours for this season because of safety issues.

  • Summer Season (March to May): The summer season should be avoided for trekking to Sandhan Valley. Mercury rises extremely high above 35°C, and physical trekking physically tires and becomes unsafe, with possibilities of heatstroke due to dehydration. Even the out-in-the-open rocky path route also gets too hot, and this reduces overall comfort and joy in the trek.
