Pench Tiger Trail – Jungle Safari Adventure in Madhya Pradesh
Right at the heart of Madhya Pradesh lies the Pench Tiger Reserve, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for nature and wildlife lovers and trekkers too. Covering an area of more than 750 square kilometres, the reserve is a verdant stretch of dry deciduous forests, rolling hills of smooth roll, and the refreshing Pench River, which runs right through its middle. The park has been named after the river, which had inspired Rudyard Kipling to pen his timeless bestseller "The Jungle Book" and is a living reality of India's unbridled splendour. Pench abounds with fauna of animals such as the royal Bengal tiger, leopards, wild dogs (dholes), sloth bears, and herbivores such as chital, sambar, and nilgai. Wildlife lovers, further, can come to the place, and with more than 280 species of birds such as Indian pitta, Malabar pied hornbill, and migratory birds of various kinds in and around water bodies, the total ecosystem of this location makes it an over-the-top viewing point for wildlife enthusiasts who want to see wildlife in their natural surroundings. The most visited place for trekkers is the Runi Jhuni Nature Trail, a guided 3-4-kilometer trekking through the buffer areas of the sanctuary. The trek provides an eye-to-eye and interactive sighting of the local fauna and flora, apart from the usual jeep safaris. The sanctuary is also India's first 'Dark Sky Sanctuary' and has excellent facilities for stargazing, open at night for public observation. From lavish lodges to green resorts, Pench has something for every traveller. Safaris and nature walks are meticulously organised so that you have a safe but information-rich experience. Whether it is – tiger tracking by the clever tiger, listening to the songs of birds in the morning, or looking up at the sky with a cover of stars at night – Pench Tiger Trail guarantees an experience to cherish in nature.History of Pench Tiger ReservePench Tiger Reserve is strongly established on natural and cultural heritage. Its geographical source is the Pench River, which flows from north to south and separates the reserve into its eastern and western parts. Its forests were spoken of in ancient times and brought back to life again by Rudyard Kipling in his "The Jungle Book", based on its green forests and flora and fauna species that cover its land. These forests were owned by indigenous Gond tribes and kept as hunting reserves by the British and local kings during the colonial period. Natural resources of the region were exploited early on, and attempts were made to conserve them. Pench was first notified as a sanctuary in 1965 and then as a national park in 1975. Due to its ecological value as well as the richness of Bengal tigers, it came under Project Tiger in 1992, and by law, it was notified as a tiger reserve. Pench Tiger Reserve is today one of the larger Satpura-Maikal habitats, which encompasses the Kanha and Satpura reserves and constitutes an important wildlife corridor in Central India. The landscape is diverse in flora and fauna and is instrumental in tiger preservation. Conservation not only contributed towards the growth in the number of tigers in the long term but also made the local inhabitants a part of eco-tourism and conservation activities. Pench remains India's gold standard of wildlife protection, trapped as it is between tourism and ecological conservation. Its earlier transition from hunting reserve to protected reserve is a testament to the changing Indian romance with nature, namely one that values conservation, education, and ecologically responsible discovery more and more.Places to visit near Pench Tiger ReserveKanha National Park: Around 200 km from Pench lies Kanha, India's greatest tiger reserve and setting of Kipling's "Jungle Book." It's 10°C to 25°C, perfect weather for safaris and trekking. The sun forces the animals to stay near water bodies, and tiger and wildlife sightings become more convenient.Early Summer (March to April): With the weather warming up, the water sources within the forest start evaporating, pushing animals towards accessible water sources. It is tiger spotting season. Despite being warm, mornings and evenings are chilly for safaris.Monsoon (July to September): Pench Tiger Reserve is shut down during monsoon as it gets heavy rain and is marred by security issues. But buffer zones could be seen as half-open. The forest is denser, but animal activity is low.How to Reach Pench Tiger ReserveBy Airport: The nearest airport is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, 90 km from Pench Tiger Reserve. The airport has flights from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. A taxi or personal vehicle could be booked from the airport to the reserve, and by road travel, it is 2 to 3 hours.By Train: The closest railway station is Nagpur Railway Station, which is a very crowded Central Indian junction railway station, about 90 km away from the sanctuary. It is well linked to all the cities by regular trains. You may take a taxi, rent an auto, or opt for pre-booked Pench safari packages that offer transport facilities up to Pench.By Road: Pench is road-connected easily and can be accessed from Nagpur via NH44 (old NH7). Drive over from surrounding towns such as Nagpur (90 km), Jabalpur (200 km), or Seoni (30 km). Roads are excellent all around, making it an easily drivable destination. Bus services are also available between Nagpur and Seoni and the surrounding villages of Turia, Khawasa, and Sillari, the main entry points to the park.By Bus: Seoni, Nagpur, Chhindwara, and surrounding towns are connected by state transport and passenger buses. You will not be dropped as close to the reserve gate by buses, but you can get down at the nearest bus stand and cover the last mile by local auto or taxi.
