Churdhar Trek is considered a moderate-level trek in the Himalayas. While it doesn’t have the extreme altitude of treks like Roopkund or Stok Kangri, its 16 km ascent from Nohradhar can be demanding, especially for beginners. The steep climbs, rocky patches, and long trekking hours require decent fitness and endurance.
The trek offers diverse terrain, including dense pine and deodar forests, open meadows, rocky trails, and steep ridges. The final stretch near the summit has rugged, boulder-filled paths, similar to treks in higher Himalayan regions. In winter, the trail is covered in snow, making the climb even more adventurous.
At 3,647 meters (11,965 feet), Churdhar Peak is the highest peak in the Shivalik range. It is lower than famous Himalayan treks like Kedarkantha (12,500 feet) or Hampta Pass (14,100 feet) but still offers a significant challenge due to its steep gradient and high-altitude weather conditions.
The best time for the Churdhar Trek is April to June and September to November. Summer offers lush greenery and clear skies, while post-monsoon months provide crisp air and golden landscapes. Winter treks (December to March) are possible but require snow trekking gear as the route becomes covered in thick snow.
Yes, Churdhar is a good beginner-friendly trek for those wanting to experience Himalayan trekking without extreme altitudes. However, beginners should prepare for long walking hours (6-8 hours per day) and steep climbs. Regular cardio workouts, leg strength training, and practice hikes will help in preparation.
Since the trek involves continuous ascents and descents, trekkers should have basic fitness and endurance. It's recommended to do:
Cardio exercises (running, cycling, or swimming) for stamina
Leg strength training (squats, lunges, stair climbing)
Practice hikes on uneven terrain to get used to long-distance walking
Packing depends on the season:
Summer: Light trekking clothes, rain jacket, sunblock, and water
Winter: Insulated jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and snow-resistant boots
Year-round: Trekking pole, good grip shoes, headlamp, first-aid kit, and sufficient snacks for energy boosts
Some of the toughest aspects include:
Steep ascents: The climb from Nohradhar is long and demanding.
Unpredictable weather: Sudden fog or rain can make trails slippery.
Final rocky section: The last few kilometers before the peak are challenging, especially in winter when covered in snow.
Yes, camping is possible at different points like Jamna Ka Thatch and Teesri Meadow before reaching the summit. However, trekkers should carry their own tents, sleeping bags, and camping gear, as facilities are minimal. Camping under a starlit Himalayan sky is a magical experience!
Churdhar is part of a wildlife sanctuary, so you may spot:
Himalayan black bears and barking deer
Musk deer and langurs
Himalayan monals (state bird of Uttarakhand)
The forests are rich in biodiversity, making it an excellent trek for nature lovers.
Churdhar vs. Triund: Churdhar is longer (16 km one way vs. 9 km for Triund) and more challenging.
Churdhar vs. Kedarkantha: Kedarkantha is at a higher altitude (12,500 feet) and has more snow, while Churdhar offers a mix of dense forests and rocky ridges.
Yes, you can join the trek to Churdhar. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.

The Churdhar Trek is a great path through the heart of the Shivalik hills. It gives a good mix of the beauty of nature, a spirit-like feel, and fun times. It sits in the Sirmaur area of Himachal Pradesh and goes up to the Churdhar Peak at 3,647 meters high, the tallest peak in the outer mountains. The spot gets its name, "Churdhar," from looking like it's in a silver robe, with its snow top shining in winter. The trip is medium hard, about 16-18 kilometers one way, starting from Nohradhar. Walkers go through thick woods of deodar, pine, and oak, full of life, seeing birds, deer, and wild plants. The road goes from tree paths to rocky tops and ends with wide views from the top. A major spot is the old Chureshwar Mahadev Temple for Lord Shiva, near the top, drawing people from nearby areas. The spirit feels calm, hills make it a deep rest spot for both trekkers and holy visitors. From the peak, one can see far hills like Kedarnath on clear days. It's a good trek for those new or those used to trekking, looking for a weekend trip or a spiritual touch.
The Churdhar Trek is more than a pretty path. It holds a story, a myth, and a spiritual value. The big Churdhar Peak, at 3,647 meters, is key in the faith and story space of Himachal Pradesh and the hills around. It also goes by "mountain in moonlight" because it looks like it's wearing snow, especially in winter. You can see it from far, and it used to be a spot to watch over the Sutlej Valley. But what makes it special are its deep spiritual ties. On top sits the Chureshwar Mahadev Temple, for Lord Shiva, very old and sacred. It is linked to tales and Hindu lore, like where Lord Hanuman grabbed a life-saving herb during an old war in stories. This makes the peak epic, bringing people from far. Also, the great star watcher, Aryabhatta, is said to have studied stars here long ago.
In older times and during the rule times, the area was cut off due to rough land and thick woods, but it always drew local holy men and seekers. The woods were once rich in hunts, and saving the wildlife in recent years helps keep its variety, now called the Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary since 1985. Over time, the Churdhar trek went from just a spirit trip to a liked path for trekkers and those who love nature. Today, it mixes old spirit acts with the fun of hiking. Big fests in summer bring lots of people who trek with little or no gear as a faith act. In all, Churdhar's story is a rich mix of myth, spirit, old science, and nature. Whether you come for its religious weight, old tales, or just the pull of a Himalayan trip, Churdhar gives a deep and rich visit, full of old ways and culture.
Nohradhar: This is the key spot to start the Churdhar Walk. It is a small area in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, with easy food and spots to stay for those who walk. The area, full of trees and hills, is still and is the top spot to start the 16–18 km walk to Churdhar Top.
Haripurdhar: About 35 km from Nohradhar, Haripurdhar is a neat hill spot with an age-old Bhangayani Mata Temple. This town is high up and lets you see the hills near it. You can also start the Churdhar walk from here, and it’s good for those on a holy trip.
Renuka Lake: About 80 km from Churdhar, Renuka Lake is the biggest true lake in Himachal Pradesh. It got its name from Goddess Renuka, mom of Lord Parshuram, and is a holy place. The lake, with its still woods and temples, is a smooth spot for those who love nature and folks who pray.
Rajgarh: Named the "Peach Valley," Rajgarh is around 50 km from Nohradhar. Known for its fruit farms, Rajgarh is a sweet hill town and a good rest area on the way to Churdhar. The area has fine fields, local shops, and a no-hurry feel.
Solan: About 90 km away, Solan is famed in Himachal as the “Mushroom City of India.” It's a fine place for guests looking for better rooms and help before the walk. Solan has old temples, beer spots, and lovely sights.
Shimla: About 110 km from Churdhar, Shimla, the main town of Himachal Pradesh, pulls a lot of guests. It has old-style houses, shop streets, and broad views of the Himalayas. Walkers often make a stop in Shimla before or after the Churdhar Walk for a longer stay.
Summer (May to June): Summer is a nice time to hit the Churdhar Walk. Now, the snow melts, making the path open and safe. It's warm in the day from 10°C to 20°C, nice for walking. The woods are bright green, and the sky is clear for fine sights from the top. This time is also busy as more folks visit, making it full of life yet easy.
Rain Time (July to September): The rain time makes the woods and fields bright, but it's not the best time for a walk here. The rain can make the path slick and not safe. Slides of land and leech-filled paths are also normal then. Still, for those who like to walk alone and want a bold feel, the rainy season offers a rare time with foggy paths and hidden forest sights.
Fall Season (October to November): Fall is also a good time for a walk. After the rains, the air is fresh, and the paths are dry and easy to walk on. The woods change to beautiful fall colours, and the sky is clear, giving a good view of the far hills. Few folks this season make it ideal for those who want a quiet, chill walk.
Cold Months (December to April): Cold months cover Churdhar in snow, but walking gets very hard and often not possible. Deep snow blocks the paths, and it gets cold, even under freezing. While the top looks fine in snow, only skilled climbers with the right gear try this path in winter. Most folks should not go then because of the harsh weather and safety concerns.
By Road: Churdhar has good roads that link it to big towns in Himachal Pradesh and near states. The usual start point for the walk is Nohradhar, reached by bus or car from Solan, Shimla, Nahan, or Chandigarh. From Nohradhar, the walk to Churdhar Top is about 16–18 km. You can use regular buses, and the roads are fine, mostly in summer and fall.
By Train: The train station closest to Churdhar is Solan Railway Station, about 90 km from Nohradhar. Solan links well to Kalka using the small rail line from Kalka to Shimla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Solan, you can get a car or a bus to reach Nohradhar or Haripurdhar, based on your walking path.
By Airport: The nearest plane spot near is Chandigarh Airport, around 130 km from Nohradhar. Another pick is Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti), about 105 km away, but with less reach. From either, you can get a car or bus to Solan or Nahan, then head to the walk's start point.
