The Kuppar Bugyal Trek is a hidden spot deep in Himachal Pradesh. It gives a mix of nature, calm fields, and big views of the Himalayas. Close to Rohru in Shimla, this lesser-known path goes through thick woods full of tall trees before you see big green fields called "bugyals". Standing at about 9,500 feet, Kuppar Bugyal is still not fully known by people. It's a great place for those who love quiet and want to get away from crowded paths. This trek starts from Kharapathar, a small place about 80 km from Shimla. The walk is quite easy and you can finish it in one or two days - good for new walkers and families. As you go up, the view changes a lot. In summer, the fields fill with wildflowers, and in winter, snow covers everything, making the walk feel new. At the top, you can see all around - peaks like Chanshal, Bandarpoonch, and bits of Uttarakhand. More than just its beauty, Kuppar Bugyal has stories and a deep spirit. The Kuppar Temple, for a god named Giri Ganga, brings a holy feel and is visited by locals. The calm air, cool winds, and the sound of birds make this trek a refreshing break. Perfect for a short trip or a nature-filled break, the Kuppar Bugyal Trek is a not-so-well-known yet very rewarding walk that shows the untouched beauty of the Western Himalayas.
In the quiet parts of Himachal Pradesh's Rohru area, Kuppar Bugyal may not be famous all over India, but it means a lot in history, culture, and stories to the local groups. The word "Bugyal" means a high field in the local talk, and like many such places in the Himalayas, Kuppar Bugyal is a mix of nature and a spot that has seen years of tradition, holy acts, and local life. Over time, groups from the area, like shepherds and roaming tribes, used these fields for their animals. These green fields were key summer places for animals like sheep, goats, and cows. Over the years, these fields mixed with the local way of life, their work, and the movement of people depending on the season. The path to Kuppar was first used not by trekkers but by villagers, shepherds, and traders. In tales and spirit, Kuppar Bugyal has a key spot in local stories. It has the Kuppar Temple, also known as Giri Ganga Mandir, for Lord Shiva. It's said by locals that this temple is one of Lord Shiva's homes and that the holy Giri Ganga river started here. Long ago, wise men and rishis came here to think, pulled by its far-off and pure nature.
The temple sits in thick woods and is still a holy spot for people near, and sees more people during holy days and local events. In the past, British leaders sometimes came here when Shimla was their summer spot. Kuppar was used for tree cutting, but its hard reach and thick woods kept a lot of its clear beauty. The woods around the field are now kept safe by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, making sure their nature and history stay safe. As walking became more liked in India, less known paths like Kuppar Bugyal started to draw those who love adventure. But it has stayed less known compared to other paths, mostly because it's out of the way and not yet a big business place, adding to its charm and pull. The story of Kuppar Bugyal is a mix of local ways of life, holy stories, and preserving nature. It shows the long link between people and the mountains, where nature is loved, not beaten. Today, while it welcomes a few thoughtful walkers, it remains a calm place where you can not only enjoy big views of the Himalayas but also feel part of a story that goes back long before people started walking for fun.
Giri Ganga Temple: Close to the start of the Kuppar Bugyal walk, this temple sits in thick woods of pine and deodar trees. It's for Lord Shiva and is loved by the people here. There are springs in the temple area, and it's said to be where the Giri Ganga River starts. It's a calm, holy place that makes the walk richer. It's great for both thinking and looking around.
Kharapathar: This is where you start the Kuppar Bugyal walk. It's known for its apple trees and wide views of the Pabbar Valley. This small spot is high up and good for getting used to the air before the walk. It's also a base for seeing other spots and shows life in a Himachali town.
Rohru: About 35 km from Kharapathar, Rohru is a nice town by the Pabbar River. It's known for trout fishing, apples, and old Himachali buildings. It's a good extra stop if you want to see more. The town's beauty and easy reach to other cool places make it a must-see.
Chanshal Pass: This pass is 60 km from Kuppar Bugyal and very high up. You can see snow and mountains far off, and it's a top spot for taking photos and road trips. The way there is fun, and you'll see great views and hidden villages.
Hatkoti: 40 km from Kuppar Bugyal, Hatkoti is known for its Hatkeshwari Temple for Goddess Durga. Built in Himachali style, it's an important place for visits. It sits where two rivers meet, with farms and green valleys around, making it both pretty and holy.
Jubbal Palace: Near Kharapathar, this palace mixes European and Himachali styles. It was once a royal home, and now it is partly a hotel but still has its old feel. It's great for learning history and culture.
Summer (April to June): This is the best time to visit. The snow is gone, and the path is clear with flowers and green grass. The weather is nice, perfect for walking and camping. Nature fans, photo takers, and new trekkers love it then.
Rainy Season (July to September): It rains a lot, making the road slick. While the fields and woods are full of life, walking is hard and not always safe due to falling rocks and bugs. Still, if you like rain and are okay with some risk, it's very pretty.
Fall (October to November): Another great time to visit. You get clear views and cool, not cold air, good for walking. The woods turn orange and yellow, good for quiet walks and photos.
Winter (December to March): It's cold and all white. Snow covers the path, perfect for snow walks and looking for an adventure. You need the right clothes and maybe a guide because it's cold and snowy. It's good if you like less noise and snow adventure.
By Road: You can get there by car from Kharapathar, the walk's start. Kharapathar has roads to big towns in Himachal Pradesh. From Shimla, about 80 km away, you can grab a taxi or a bus. The drive shows you apple trees, pine woods, and mountain views. From there, walk for 6–7 km through thick woods to reach Kuppar Bugyal.
By Railway Station: The closest station is Shimla Station. It connects to Kalka by a train ride with great views. From Kalka, you can get to big cities like Delhi. Once in Shimla, grab a bus or taxi to Kharapathar, taking about 3 to 4 hours.
By Airport: The closest airport is Shimla Airport, about 105 km from Kharapathar. But flights can be iffy due to weather. A better choice might be Chandigarh International Airport, about 200 km from Kharapathar. From there, take a bus or taxi to Shimla, then go by road to Kharapathar.
By Bus: There are regular buses to Rohru and Kharapathar from Shimla and nearby places. Even though buses to Kharapathar are few, those to Rohru are more common. From there, grab a local cab to Kharapathar. This choice is good for those who want to save money and see local life.
