Hidden deep in the green fields and tall hills of Jammu & Kashmir, the Bodpathri Lake Trek is a secret spot for those who love nature and seek thrills. It sits in the beautiful area of Gulmarg and is known for its raw beauty, clear lakes, and wide, high fields that go on and on. This trek lets you see valleys that not many know, perfect for folks who like quiet, far from busy tourist paths. Your walk starts in thick pine woods, where the fresh air of the mountains and the soft sound of leaves get you ready for what’s coming. As you go up, the view changes to big green fields full of wild flowers, sheep, and now and then a Gujjar shepherd’s home, showing a bit of how people here live their old ways. The path slowly shows a row of untouched high lakes, with Bodpathri Lake being the best of them all. With snowy tops around and its calm water showing their mirror image, the lake is a dream view for walkers.
What makes the Bodpathri Lake Trek stand out is its pure charm; few walkers come here, making it just right for those who wish to feel the wild side of the Himalayas. The walk is somewhat tough, with easy climbs and a few steep parts, good for both expert walkers and keen starters who are fit. On your way, you can also see wide views of the Pir Panjal Range, falling streams, and blooming fields in the summer. Best done from June to September, when the paths are open and the fields are full of life, the Bodpathri Lake Trek offers a mix of adventure, getting to know the culture, and amazing natural sights, making it an unforgettable trip in the Himalayas.
The Bodpathri Lake area, set in the dream-like lands of Jammu & Kashmir’s Gulmarg, carries a rich but not much-told story. Unlike some Himalayan trek spots that have been known for ages, Bodpathri’s past is linked with local shepherd ways, old trade paths, and the wild Pir Panjal range. In the past, the fields around Bodpathri were used by the Gujjars and Bakarwals, moving tribes known for taking their sheep and goats up each summer. These high fields, full of wild flowers and streams from ice, were great for the animals. For many years, Bodpathri was more a work path than a fun place, its beauty seen more by herdsmen than travellers. This area also had a small part in old cross-valley moves and trade. While not a big trade path like Zoji La, Bodpathri’s trails linked far-off towns and fields, fast sports shoes made goods like wool, ghee, and healing herbs move around. In the past, these paths were mostly walked by locals, and people from afar hardly came because it was so far and hard to reach. In the late 20th century, the tough political mood in Kashmir meant that many of its far paths, including Bodpathri, were closed to people from outside for safety. This helped keep its untouched state. Unlike other trek spots that slowly built up, Bodpathri kept its pure charm from less human touch.
In the last years, with more calm and a growing interest in nature-loving trips, the trek has started to open to those who love adventure. Walkers and camera folks have begun to show their stunning sights, fields full of wildflowers, high lakes shining under blue skies, and wide views of the Pir Panjal Range. Yet, Bodpathri stays far from a common trek path, adding to its pull for those looking for a different Himalayan trip. The lake itself, like many in Kashmir, is full of local tales. Village folk tell old stories that tie the high lakes to deep meaning, with some saying that these high waters are holy and should be approached with care. This deep respect means that locals keep seeing Bodpathri as more than just a pretty place; it's part of their history and yearly life rhythm. Now, the Bodpathri Lake Trek stands as both a gem of nature and a living sign of culture. Its past is not in old stones or broken walls, but in the steps of shepherd generations, the yearly bloom of fields, and the quiet staying power of an untouched Himalayan wild. This mix of nature, way of life, and history makes Bodpathri a rare spot in a world where few places stay hidden.
Gulmarg: Just a short travel from where we start the Bodpathri Lake Trek, Gulmarg is one of Kashmir’s top hill stations. Known for its green fields, ski paths, and the world’s top golf spot, Gulmarg also gives amazing views of the snowy Himalayas. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s high cable cars, is a must for wide mountain sights.
Alpather Lake: Near the foot of Apharwat Peak, Alpather Lake is a high-altitude icy lake about 13 km from Gulmarg. Surrounded by big mountains and often part-frozen until deep summer, it’s a short walk or pony ride from Gulmarg. Its clear waters show the snow-topped peaks, a dream for any photo lover.
Apharwat Peak: This grand peak, which you can reach by the Gulmarg Gondola, is one of the area's best view spots. Standing over 4,000 meters, Apharwat gives clear views of the Pir Panjal range and is a door to many lesser-known trek paths. In winter, it turns into a place for skiing and snowboarding.
Drang Waterfall: Found in the Tangmarg area, Drang Waterfall is a calm and fresh stop on the way to Gulmarg. Its falling waters, against pine hills, make it a loved picnic place and a great spot for walks in nature.
Tosamaidan: Another big field in the Pir Panjal range, Tosamaidan is known for its wide, rolling grasslands and past role as an old path linking Kashmir to Poonch. It is less walked, offering quiet and pure Himalayan charm like Bodpathri.
Khilanmarg: Just a quick walk or pony ride from Gulmarg, Khilanmarg is known for its fields full of wildflowers in spring and summer. From here, you see great views of Nanga Parbat, Nun Kun, and other high Himalayan peaks.
Summer (June to August): Summer is the top time to walk the Bodpathri Lake Trek. During these months, the snow has gone, showing green grass filled with wildflowers. The weather is nice, with open skies giving clear views of the Pir Panjal range. This is also when the Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherds move to the high grasslands, adding a local feel to the walk. Streams are full, and the lakes are clear, making it a great time for photos and camping.
Early Autumn (September): September is a great time for walkers who like fewer people and a bit cooler air. The fields turn golden, and the skies stay mostly open. Nights can be cold, but the fresh air adds to the feel of walking in the high areas. With fewer people, you get to enjoy the quiet and alone feel of Bodpathri in its purest form.
Winter and Early Spring (October to May): The Bodpathri Lake Trek is mostly closed from late October through May because of heavy snow and very cold air. The area has deep snow, frozen lakes, and shut paths, making it not safe for walking. Only skilled winter walkers with the right gear might try nearby places, but the main path to Bodpathri is shut during this time.
By Airport: The nearest plane place to the Bodpathri Lake Trek is Srinagar International Airport, about 50–60 km from Gulmarg, which is the start for the trek. The plane spot links well to big Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From Srinagar, you can book a car or take a shared cab to Gulmarg, which is about 2–3 hours away.
By Train: The nearest train stops are Sopore Railway Station or Srinagar Railway Station, but train links in Kashmir are limited. For long trips, the nearest big train stop is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, about 300 km away. From Jammu, you can get to Srinagar or Gulmarg by bus, shared cab, or private car, taking about 7–8 hours on the road.
By Road: Gulmarg, the start for the Bodpathri Lake Trek, is linked well by road to Srinagar and other parts of Jammu & Kashmir. Regular buses and shared cabs go between Srinagar and Gulmarg via Tangmarg. The drive shows you apple farms, pine woods, and lovely Kashmiri villages. Private cars are also there for a more comfortable ride.
