Blog - Shumga Top Trek: A Quick Guide

Set in the clean wild of Parvati Valley in Himachal Pradesh, the Shumga Top Trek is a secret spot for trekkers who want to be alone, see raw beauty, and look at big Himalayan views. Sitting at about 13,000 feet, Shumga Top gives an amazing view of Parvati Valley, the Kullu area, and the snow-covered peaks of the Great Himalayan range. This not-so-well-known trek begins from the small village of Barshaini, which is also the start for other known treks like Kheerganga and Pin Parvati Pass. But, Shumga stays hidden, giving a more alone and pure trekking time. The path goes through thick pine and oak forests, green fields, and lovely ridges, at last opening to a high field at the top. On the way, trekkers can see many Himalayan plants and animals, cross shepherd paths, and camp under a sky full of stars with wide views of peaks like Deo Tibba, Papsura, and Indrasan. The trek is not too hard, making it good for fit beginners and old trekkers who want a different Himalayan trip. A big part of the trek is in small villages like Kalga, Pulga, and Tulga, where trekkers can meet kind Himachali people and live their simple, mountain life. The trek is usually done in 4 to 5 days, with campsites and natural water spots along the way. Great for nature fans, camera people, and adventure seekers, the Shumga Top Trek offers peace, lovely sights, and a true step into the wild Himalayas far from busy trails but close to the heart of nature. It's a top pick for those who want a calm but exciting trek.

History of Shumga Top Trek

The Shumga Top Trek, though not as known as other Himalayan paths, is full of nature, culture, and spirit from Parvati Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The area around Shumga Top has had Himalayan people for a long time, with old stories, deep customs, and a strong spiritual linked to the mountains. The Parvati Valley, where Shumga Top sits, has been important in local and mythological stories. Hindu stories say the valley is named after Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva. They say Parvati thought hard in this valley while Lord Shiva did his deep thinking in the upper Himalayas. This whole area has always been seen as holy, pulling wise people, loners, and later, those looking for peace and light. In history, the villages around Shumga Kalga, Pulga, Tulga, and Barshaini have been small farm communities that lived on farming, cattle, and forest products. These villages still keep much of their old wood buildings and life ways, showing a bit of Himachal Pradesh’s culture past. The path to Shumga Top was first used by local shepherds and villagers to keep livestock and get herbs and wood. In time, it became known among trekkers wanting to find new, high places. In the early 2000s, as trekking and adventure travel grew in Himachal Pradesh, discoverers and climbers began writing about less-walked paths beyond the usual tourist spots like Kheerganga and Tosh. Shumga Top caught their eye because of its top views, untouched nature, and spiritual feel. But unlike other big treks, Shumga stayed off the main road, keeping its raw charm.

The path goes through thick forests that are part of the Himalayan tropical and alpine systems, which have been there for thousands of years. These forests have many animals, including Himalayan monals, musk deer, and sometimes bears and snow leopards at high elevations. For hundreds of years, these forests have been holy trees for locals, where cutting trees or hunting animals was not allowed. Culturally, the Shumga area also shows a mix of Hindu and old Himalayan beliefs. Many locals say the mountains, rivers, and fields are homes of godly spirits. So, the place around Shumga Top is seen as very spirit and is treated with care and rites by the villagers, mainly during the times they move with the seasons. Today, Shumga Top shows the fine line between keeping traditions and exploring. It keeps giving a raw, deep trekking time while keeping the stories and spirit of the mountains. Its history is not about wars or old buildings, but about the quiet, hard life of mountain folks, the untouched, clean nature, and the old pull of the Himalayas that have pulled people for hundreds of years for peace, being alone, and joining.
