The trek is moderately difficult and not ideal for complete beginners. It requires good physical fitness, prior trekking experience, and acclimatization due to the rugged terrain and high altitude.
The trek typically takes 2-3 days, including the journey from Yamunotri Temple to Saptarishi Kund and back. The duration depends on weather conditions, trekking pace, and acclimatization needs.
The ideal time is May to June and September to October, when the weather is pleasant, and the trails are clear. The monsoon season should be avoided due to landslides and slippery paths.
The trek reaches approximately 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) above sea level. Due to the high altitude, trekkers must take precautions against altitude sickness and ensure proper acclimatization.
Take a flight or train to Dehradun. From there, travel to Hanuman Chatti via bus or taxi. Then, trek to Yamunotri Temple and proceed towards Saptarishi Kund with a guide.
Yes, but it’s advisable to travel in groups or with a guide. The route is remote, and hiring a trusted trekking company ensures safety. Always inform someone about your itinerary.
Basic medical facilities are available at Janki Chatti and Yamunotri Temple, but not beyond. Carry a personal first-aid kit and necessary medications, as high-altitude sickness can be a concern.
A guide is highly recommended, as the trail is not well-marked and involves steep ascents. Local guides have knowledge of the terrain and can assist in case of emergencies.
Basic vegetarian food is available at Janki Chatti and Yamunotri Temple, but beyond that, food options are scarce. It’s advisable to carry dry fruits, energy bars, and instant meals.
The trek passes through Himalayan forests where wildlife like mountain goats, Himalayan monals, and occasional bears may be spotted. Staying in groups and avoiding nighttime trekking is advisable.
Pack thermal wear, a down jacket, trekking pants, gloves, a beanie, and waterproof trekking shoes. Layering is essential due to temperature variations at different altitudes.
Yes, you can join the trek to Saptarishi Kund. The trek’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
Your money will be refunded within 2-3 business days.
Unfortunately, it's not feasible to reschedule your trek to a future date if you're unable to attend on the designated day, regardless of the circumstances (like family emergencies, health problems, or work commitments). However, if you have concerns about this policy, please don't hesitate to email us at info@escape2explore.com, and our team will get in touch with you to discuss further.

Set apart on a stunning high-altitude walk in Uttarakhand, India's Uttarkashi region, is the Saptarishi Kund Trek. Considered to be the source of the revered Yamuna River, Saptarishi Kund is a glacial lake found at an elevation of roughly 4,350 meters (14,270 feet). Intended to be the meditation place of the seven great sages, or Saptarishis, referenced in Hindu scriptures, this trip is full of legend and spirituality. Starting at Yamunotri, one of the Char Dhams, trekkers are presented with a stunning blend of natural beauty, spiritual energy, and hard terrain. Experienced hikers formerly used to high-altitude circumstances will find the steep and rocky road to Saptarishi Kund acceptable. The route climbs steep inclines, traverses thick birch and pine woodlands, and takes in stunning meadows. One's ascent reveals spectacular views for trekkers of snow-covered ridges and beautiful Himalayan mountains.
Though the final part leading to the glacial lake is quite challenging, often covered in scree and boulders, the sight of the sapphire blue Kund surrounded by enormous snowcapped mountains is a pleasure unlike any other. Unusual Himalayan herbs abound on this walk, which also presents chances to see species including the Himalayan Monal or Bharal (blue sheep). Most of the year, the lake itself stays iced; May and October offer the best time to come. The Saptarishi Kund Trek provides a great Himalayan getaway for those wanting to more deeply connect with nature and spirituality, as well as a test of willpower and endurance. It provides not only a travel across terrain but also across legends and ideas.
Because it is intimately linked in the ancient Hindu writings and epics, Kund has great symbolic and historical meaning. Honouring seven sages Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni, and Vashishta, considered the patriarchs of Vedic knowledge and claimed to have meditated at this holy location thousands of years ago, Saptarishi Kund Lake of the Seven Sages. Thanks to this mythological link, Saptarishi Kund has evolved into both a spiritual location and a physical marvel for seekers and adherents. Near the source of the Yamuna River, Saptarishi Kund is closely related to the stories surrounding Yamunotri, one of the four revered Char Dham pilgrimage places in Uttarakhand. Hindu mythology says that Surya, the Sun God, sister are Yama, the God of Death. The Yamuna River is supposed to originate at the Saptarishi Kund, where the sages performed extreme atonement and ceremonies to purify their spirits. Regarded as sacred, the seas of this glacier lake are said to make amends for mistakes and acquire spiritual value. Swimming in them is claimed to enable one to grow spiritual worth.
For years, saints and enlightened people have praised the area surrounding Yamunotri temple and Saptarishi Kund. Over millennia, the tale spread throughout the Indian peninsula, attracting seekers of spiritual illumination as well as people seeking to honour the celestial saints at this remote lake. Sadhus and pilgrims came in large numbers. Though hard and brutal in terrain, ascetics and brave supporters turned the road to Saptarishi Kund into a spiritual pilgrimage. Trekkers and mountaineers recently asked about Saptarishi Kund, driven by its remote location and glacial origins. This among the highest elevation glacial lakes in the vicinity, situated at about 4,350 meters. Even if it presents physical challenges, its peaceful setting and symbolic connections have always attracted both explorers and spiritual seekers.
As it tries to preserve its pure beauty and spiritual ambience, the trek to Saptarishi Kund is still relatively less commercialised. This hike offers a unique perspective on the age-old spiritual practices of the Himalayas, with an unadulterated and raw appeal unlike other well-known walks in Uttarakhand. Local guides and trek groups have worked for many years to increase understanding of ecologically friendly trekking practices meant to protect the fragile lake ecosystem. The story of Saptarishi Kund is more than simply a geographical location; it is a confluence of mythology, spirituality, and the natural beauty of the Himalayas. Honouring India's illustrious religious and cultural past, where god and nature intertwine. Saptarishi Kund is still a potent symbol of inner search, persistence, and respect for the old sages who once traversed these sacred paths, be it a walk or a pilgrimage.
Temple of Yamunotri: One of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, the Yamunotri Temple, is situated a few kilometres below Saptarishi Kund, the official starting point of the Yamuna River. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this holy sanctuary draws thousands of annual visitors. Starting at the temple, which has great spiritual significance, the Saptarishi Kund Trek begins. Also alluring are hot springs near the temple, like Surya Kund and Divya Shila.
Chatti Hanuman: About 13 kilometres before Yamunotri, Hanuman Chatti offers a starting point for several excursions, including those to Yamunotri, Dodital, and Darwa Pass. It is a small town surrounded by mountains bearing Lord Hanuman's name. Sometimes, stopping here for a brief break to savour the peaceful atmosphere and prepare for the climb ahead are trekkers and pilgrims.
Barkot: Barkot, a picturesque hamlet, is around 49 kilometres from Yamunotri. It is a regular stop for visitors going to Saptarishi Kund and Yamunotri. The town has a great selection of basic lodging, eateries, and breathtaking snowy Himalayan scenery. Before going to altitude, it's also a great spot to acclimate.
Kharsali Village: Found not far from Yamunotri is Kharsali, a little traditional hamlet noted for its old structures and as Goddess Yamuna's winter residence. The god's idol is carried here after the Yamunotri Temple closes for winter. Kharsali offers a peek into the local Garhwali lifestyle amid rich flora and wooden houses.
Dodital Lake: Dodital Lake is another high-altitude freshwater lake, a bit farther away but close to Uttarkashi. Regarded as Lord Ganesha's birthplace, it is famous for its crystal-clear water. Among enthusiasts of the natural world, the Dodital trek is rather well-known; it is a wonderful alternative or дополnen to the Saptarishi Kund visit.
Valley of Har Ki Doon: Accessible from surrounding areas, Har Ki Doon is a stunning valley renowned for its alpine beauty, thick woods, and flawless meadows. Trekkers and photographers see it as a fantasy location. Though not right next to Saptarishi Kund, it is located inside the same Himalayan region and may be included with other treks to create a longer journey.
Uttarkashi: Located in the middle of the area, this large city provides access to several hikes, including Saptarishi Kund. Uttarkashi is home to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering as well as several ancient temples like the Vishwanath Temple. Well-connected roads going toward the northern extremities of the Himalayas provide several visitor amenities.
May–June: Opening the walking routes and enhancing access, the winter snow starts to melt at this point. Moderate temperatures, clear skies, and blooming alpine wildflowers add colour to the scene, defining somewhat consistent conditions. For hikers looking for excitement without intense cold, this season is perfect. Moreover, it symbolises the start of the Yamunotri travel season, hence giving the region a spiritual component.
Monsoon ( July to August ): Although normally not advised for treks to Saptarishi Kund, the monsoon months of July and August provide great wildflowers along the route. In some areas, heavy rain can cause landslides, dangerous trails, and floods, therefore increasing the hiking risk. Still, intelligent hikers ready for difficult terrain and changing weather might choose to look around during brief drought periods. Still, one should be careful during this season.
Post-monsoon ( September to mid-October ): Following the monsoon, the terrain changes into stunning vistas of clear air, snow-covered mountains, and vibrant meadows. Saptarishi Kund's most beautiful time is when the heavens remain clear, enabling magnificent views of the neighbouring Himalayan mountains
Not Recommended ( Mid-October to April ): Heavy snowfall; the walking conditions improve noticeably from the monsoon season, and the sharp post-monsoon crispness attracts particular attention. The trekking route gets very tough; the lake itself stays frozen. During the winter, Yamunotri Temple also shuts down; most roads are impassable. Because of avalanche hazards, terrible terrain, and inadequate rescue assistance, travelling under these circumstances is not suggested.
By Airport: That’d be Dehradun’s Jolly Grant (DED). It’s not right next door, it’s about 200 km away from Yamunotri, so, yeah, not exactly a quick Uber. But flights roll in from all the big cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, you get it. Once you land, snag a taxi (or if you’re feeling adventurous, hop on a bus) and head out to Hanuman Chatti or Janki Chatti. Those are your jump-off spots for the Yamunotri trek.
By Railway Station: Dehradun and Rishikesh are your best friends here. Both have solid train connections to pretty much everywhere in India. When you roll in, you’ve got options: private taxi, maybe a shared jeep if you’re not made of money. The ride to Hanuman Chatti is about 220–230 km, and, warning, you’re looking at 8–10 hours on the road. Not for the faint of heart (or the weak of bladder).
By Road: If you’re the type who likes winding roads and mountain vibes, this one’s for you. Regular buses and cabs run from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun straight to Hanuman Chatti or Janki Chatti. Janki Chatti’s a bit closer to Yamunotri and is right on the motorable road, but Hanuman Chatti is the OG base camp. Either way, get ready for some killer views of the Garhwal Himalayas and, honestly, a lot of hairpin bends. Bring snacks. Maybe some Dramamine.
