At Escape2explore, we’re committed to providing a memorable and safe trekking experience in the majestic Himalayas. The terrain and weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so please follow these essential do’s and don’ts to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
Do’s:
Listen to Your Guide: Our professional guides are experts in Himalayan trekking. Always follow their instructions and trust their judgment, especially in tricky or high-altitude areas.
Acclimatize Properly: The Himalayas mean high altitudes, which require proper acclimatization. We’ll ensure a gradual ascent, but it’s crucial to take things slow and follow the itinerary to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed.
Wear the Right Gear: The Himalayas can be cold, even in summer. Wear layered clothing, including thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy, insulated trekking boots with good grip. Bring a hat and gloves to protect yourself from cold winds.
Hydrate and Eat Well: Dehydration happens faster at high altitudes. Keep sipping water throughout the trek and eat enough food to maintain your energy. Our team will provide regular breaks to recharge.
Use Trekking Poles: Himalayan trails can be steep and uneven, so using trekking poles can greatly reduce the strain on your knees and help you maintain balance.
Respect Local Culture: The Himalayan region is home to diverse local communities with rich cultural traditions. Respect the customs, interact politely with locals, and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Carry Essential Items: Bring items like sunscreen (even in the snow!), lip balm, sunglasses, and a first-aid kit with altitude sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for the high-altitude sun and cold winds
Be Environmentally Conscious: The Himalayas are pristine and need our care. Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy by carrying back all waste, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature undisturbed.
Don’ts:
Don’t Ignore Altitude Sickness Symptoms: If you feel dizzy, have headaches, or feel nauseous, inform your guide immediately. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious health issues. We can adjust the pace or descent if needed.
Don’t Rush or Overexert Yourself: The key to trekking in the Himalayas is steady progress. Don’t rush ahead, as it can strain your body at high altitudes. Take breaks when needed and walk at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
Don’t Pack Unnecessary Items: Light backpacks make for easier treks. We’ll help you with a packing list, so don’t bring heavy or non-essential items that will weigh you down on steep climbs.
Avoid Trekking in Dangerous Weather: The Himalayan weather can change rapidly. We monitor conditions closely, but if your guide suggests delaying the trek due to rain, snow, or windstorms, trust their decision.
Don’t Wander Off Alone: The vast Himalayan landscape can be disorienting. Always stick with the group, and let your guide know if you need to stop or take a break. Avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on your own.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen the effects of altitude sickness and lower your stamina. It’s best to avoid them before and during the trek for your safety and well-being.
Don’t Harm the Environment: Avoid littering or causing damage to the natural surroundings. The Himalayas are fragile, so we ask you to be mindful and carry back any waste to designated disposal areas.

The Sandakphu Trek stands out because it offers a rare chance to see four of the world’s five tallest peaks—Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu—on a single trail. It also blends adventure with cultural richness as the route passes through charming Nepali villages and rhododendron forests. The changing landscape at every turn makes this trek truly unforgettable.
Yes, Sandakphu is generally considered safe for solo travelers. The trail is well-marked and passes through friendly mountain villages. However, it’s always advisable to go with a registered group or local guide for safety, especially since weather conditions in the Himalayas can be unpredictable. Solo trekkers will find plenty of opportunities to connect with others along the way.
Accommodation along the Sandakphu Trek is mostly in cozy tea houses or homestays run by locals. They’re basic but comfortable, with clean bedding and hearty meals. Don’t expect luxury, but do expect warmth, both literally and from the hosts. In peak seasons, pre-booking is advised as these places fill up quickly due to limited availability.
You don’t have to be a seasoned mountaineer, but a moderate level of fitness definitely helps. The trek lasts 6 to 7 days and involves walking 8–10 km a day at altitudes up to 12,000 ft. Regular walking or cardio exercises before your trip will make the journey more enjoyable and less exhausting.
You’ll mostly get simple, home-cooked meals like dal, rice, vegetables, and momos. In the tea houses, local dishes are common, and some places also serve basic continental options. The food is filling and perfect for recharging after a long hike. Carry some snacks like nuts or protein bars for extra energy during the trek.
Yes, but it’s limited. Most tea houses have charging points, but some might charge a small fee for usage. Power cuts are common in remote areas, so it’s wise to carry a fully charged power bank. If photography or navigation is important for you, plan your power usage smartly throughout the trek.
Mobile network is patchy along the trail. You’ll find decent connectivity in places like Tumling and Gairibas, but beyond that, signals can be weak or nonexistent. BSNL and Jio tend to work best in the region. Enjoy the digital detox and focus on soaking in the stunning views and fresh mountain air!
The best time is either spring (March to May) for blooming rhododendrons or autumn (October to early December) for clear mountain views. Monsoons make the trails slippery and foggy, while winter (late December to February) can bring heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures, which is beautiful but challenging for beginners.
Yes, permits are required since part of the trek goes through Singalila National Park. You can get the permits at the park entry point in Manebhanjan or via your trekking operator. The fee helps preserve the local ecosystem, and forest officers may check your permits at checkpoints along the route.
The trek usually begins at Manebhanjan, a small town near Darjeeling. The nearest airport is Bagdogra, about 100 km away. From there, you can take a taxi or shared jeep to reach Manebhanjan. It’s a scenic drive, taking around 4–5 hours. Some treks may also begin from Chitrey or Tonglu, depending on the itinerary.
It depends on the individual’s fitness level and health. While the trek is not extremely difficult, it does involve altitude and daily walking. Children over 10 and healthy seniors can enjoy the trek if they’re prepared. It’s best to consult a doctor and keep the pace slower to accommodate different energy levels.
Yes, you can join the trek to Sandakphu. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
