At Escape2explore, we’re committed to providing a memorable and safe trekking experience in the majestic Himalayas. The terrain and weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so please follow these essential do’s and don’ts to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
Do’s:
Listen to Your Guide: Our professional guides are experts in Himalayan trekking. Always follow their instructions and trust their judgment, especially in tricky or high-altitude areas.
Acclimatize Properly: The Himalayas mean high altitudes, which require proper acclimatization. We’ll ensure a gradual ascent, but it’s crucial to take things slow and follow the itinerary to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed.
Wear the Right Gear: The Himalayas can be cold, even in summer. Wear layered clothing, including thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy, insulated trekking boots with good grip. Bring a hat and gloves to protect yourself from cold winds.
Hydrate and Eat Well: Dehydration happens faster at high altitudes. Keep sipping water throughout the trek and eat enough food to maintain your energy. Our team will provide regular breaks to recharge.
Use Trekking Poles: Himalayan trails can be steep and uneven, so using trekking poles can greatly reduce the strain on your knees and help you maintain balance.
Respect Local Culture: The Himalayan region is home to diverse local communities with rich cultural traditions. Respect the customs, interact politely with locals, and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Carry Essential Items: Bring items like sunscreen (even in the snow!), lip balm, sunglasses, and a first-aid kit with altitude sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for the high-altitude sun and cold winds
Be Environmentally Conscious: The Himalayas are pristine and need our care. Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy by carrying back all waste, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature undisturbed.
Don’ts:
Don’t Ignore Altitude Sickness Symptoms: If you feel dizzy, have headaches, or feel nauseous, inform your guide immediately. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious health issues. We can adjust the pace or descent if needed.
Don’t Rush or Overexert Yourself: The key to trekking in the Himalayas is steady progress. Don’t rush ahead, as it can strain your body at high altitudes. Take breaks when needed and walk at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
Don’t Pack Unnecessary Items: Light backpacks make for easier treks. We’ll help you with a packing list, so don’t bring heavy or non-essential items that will weigh you down on steep climbs.
Avoid Trekking in Dangerous Weather: The Himalayan weather can change rapidly. We monitor conditions closely, but if your guide suggests delaying the trek due to rain, snow, or windstorms, trust their decision.
Don’t Wander Off Alone: The vast Himalayan landscape can be disorienting. Always stick with the group, and let your guide know if you need to stop or take a break. Avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on your own.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen the effects of altitude sickness and lower your stamina. It’s best to avoid them before and during the trek for your safety and well-being.
Don’t Harm the Environment: Avoid littering or causing damage to the natural surroundings. The Himalayas are fragile, so we ask you to be mindful and carry back any waste to designated disposal areas.

Are you yearning for a Himalayan trek that combines breathtaking landscapes, diverse terrains, and the thrill of crossing a high-altitude pass? Look no further than the magnificent Rupin Pass Trek. This 7-day journey takes you through dense forests, charming villages, cascading waterfalls, and snow-covered trails, culminating in the exhilarating crossing of the Rupin Pass at 15,380 feet. As seasoned trekking experts at Escape2Explore, we've guided countless adventure enthusiasts through this remarkable journey, and we're excited to share everything you need to know about this unforgettable Himalayan trek.
The Rupin Pass Trek stands out among Himalayan treks for several compelling reasons. This trek begins in Uttarakhand and ends in Himachal Pradesh, offering trekkers the unique experience of crossing state boundaries while traversing through varied landscapes. The journey takes you through dense pine forests, quaint villages with wooden houses, sprawling meadows, and snow-covered terrain.
One of the most striking features of the Rupin Pass Trek is the famous Rupin waterfall, a three-tiered cascade that creates a mesmerising spectacle against the backdrop of towering mountains. As you progress on the trek, you'll witness the gradual transformation of landscapes, from lush greenery to stark, snow-covered passes. What sets the Rupin Pass Trek apart from other Himalayan treks is its perfect blend of challenge and accessibility. While it demands physical endurance and mental resilience, especially during the pass-crossing day, it remains approachable for moderately experienced trekkers with proper preparation. This balance makes it an ideal choice for those looking to push their boundaries without venturing into extreme trekking territories.
Timing plays a crucial role in determining your experience on the Rupin Pass Trek. The trek is accessible during two primary seasons:
The spring season transforms the Rupin Pass Trek into a colorful paradise. As the snow begins to melt, the valleys come alive with vibrant wildflowers, creating a picturesque setting against the snow-capped peaks. The weather remains pleasant during the day, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C, while nights can get cold, dropping to 0°C to 5°C.
During this season, the upper reaches of the trek still retain snow, offering trekkers the thrill of snow traversing without extreme conditions. The clear skies provide excellent visibility, allowing trekkers to soak in panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.
The post-monsoon season brings a different charm to the Rupin Pass Trek. The landscape is draped in lush greenery following the monsoon rains, and the clear weather offers unobstructed views of the towering peaks. The temperature during this period ranges from 10°C to 15°C during the day and can drop to -5°C at night, especially at higher altitudes.
This season is characterised by stable weather conditions, reducing the chances of unexpected snow or rainfall. The absence of heavy snow on the lower trails makes the initial days of the trek more manageable, allowing trekkers to acclimatise better before tackling the higher altitudes.
At Escape2Explore, we recommend avoiding the monsoon season (July to August) due to heavy rainfall that makes the trails slippery and increases the risk of landslides. The winter months (November to April) are also not advisable for the Rupin Pass Trek as heavy snowfall blocks the pass and creates extremely challenging conditions.
Your Rupin Pass adventure begins with a journey to Dhaula, the starting point of the trek. From here, you'll embark on a gentle trek to Sewa Village, walking alongside the melodious Rupin River. This initial leg serves as a perfect warm-up, allowing your body to adjust to the trekking rhythm.
The trail winds through terraced fields and apple orchards, offering glimpses into the rural Himalayan lifestyle. Sewa Village, with its traditional wooden houses and friendly locals, provides an authentic cultural experience. The village sits at an altitude of 6,800 feet, offering beautiful views of the surrounding valleys.
After reaching Sewa, you'll set up camp near the village. As the sun sets behind the mountains, enjoy a hearty meal prepared by our experienced Escape2Explore team while sharing stories and preparing for the days ahead.
After a nourishing breakfast, you'll continue your journey from Sewa Village to Jiskun. This day's trek involves crossing the Rupin River via a wooden bridge and navigating through mixed forests of pine and oak. The trail gradually ascends, offering increasingly expansive views of the valley below.
As you approach Jiskun, you'll notice the landscape transitioning, with broader valleys and distant snow-capped peaks coming into view. Jiskun village sits at 7,700 feet and represents the last major settlement on this Himalayan trek before you enter more remote territories.
The village is known for its intricate woodwork and warm hospitality. Our Escape2Explore guides often arrange interactions with local families, providing insights into their sustainable mountain lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
This day marks a significant increase in altitude as you trek from Jiskun to Udaknal. The trail becomes steeper, requiring more effort but rewarding you with breathtaking scenery. You'll cross several small streams and walk through rhododendron forests that burst into vibrant colors during the spring season.
The highlight of this day is the first glimpse of the Lower Waterfall of the Rupin River, a spectacular sight that serves as a preview of the greater wonders ahead. As you climb higher, the vegetation begins to change, with alpine meadows replacing dense forests.
Udaknal, at 9,100 feet, serves as an ideal camping site with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The crisp mountain air and star-studded night sky create a magical atmosphere as you rest and prepare for the more challenging days ahead.
Today's trek takes you from Udaknal to the Lower Waterfall Camp, a significant day in terms of altitude gain and scenic beauty. The trail follows the Rupin River closely, with the sound of gushing water accompanying you throughout the day.
As you ascend, you'll reach the famous hanging village of Dhanderas Thatch, where wooden houses seem to cling precariously to the mountainside. This unique settlement provides a fascinating glimpse into how human adaptability shapes mountain communities.
The real spectacle awaits as you approach the Lower Waterfall Camp. The mighty Rupin waterfall cascades down in three distinct tiers, creating a mesmerising sight that justifies all the effort expended. The campsite at 11,200 feet offers unparalleled views of the waterfall and the U-shaped valley carved by the river over millennia.
At Escape2Explore, we emphasise the importance of acclimatisation at this altitude. Our guides lead specialised breathing exercises and ensure everyone stays well-hydrated to minimise the risk of altitude sickness.
This day involves a challenging climb from the Lower Waterfall Camp to the Upper Waterfall Camp. The trail zigzags up the mountain face, providing increasingly spectacular views of the waterfall and the valley below. The terrain changes dramatically, with rocky outcrops and occasional snow patches depending on the season.
As you climb higher, you'll notice the air getting thinner, requiring more frequent rest stops. Our experienced Escape2Explore team ensures a steady pace that balances progress with proper acclimatisation.
Upon reaching the Upper Waterfall Camp at 13,100 feet, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view that encompasses snow-covered peaks and vast mountain ranges stretching to the horizon. The campsite is situated in a natural amphitheatre of mountains, creating a surreal setting for your overnight stay.
The night temperatures at this altitude can drop significantly, sometimes below freezing. Our high-quality camping equipment and specialised sleeping bags ensure you stay warm and comfortable despite the challenging conditions.
This is the most challenging and exciting day of the Rupin Pass Trek. You'll start early, typically before dawn, to make the summit crossing safer and to optimise weather conditions. The initial climb from the Upper Waterfall Camp involves navigating through boulder zones and snow fields.
The ascent to Rupin Pass requires technical snow traversing, especially during the spring season. Our Escape2Explore guides provide specialised equipment like microspikes and ice axes when necessary, ensuring safety without compromising the adventure.
Reaching the Rupin Pass at 15,380 feet marks the pinnacle of your trekking journey. The pass offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Kinnaur and Dhauladhar ranges. The sense of achievement at this point is indescribable – you've successfully conquered one of the most beautiful passes in the Himalayas.
After celebrating at the pass, you'll begin your descent towards Ronti Gad. The descent is initially steep but gradually eases as you move into the meadows of Sangla Valley. The stark contrast between the landscapes on either side of the pass is remarkable, from the rugged, snow-covered terrain of Uttarakhand to the lush green meadows of Himachal Pradesh.
The campsite at Ronti Gad offers a well-deserved rest after the exhilarating pass crossing. Our team at Escape2Explore prepares a special celebration dinner to commemorate your achievement.
The final day of the Rupin Pass Trek involves a pleasant descent from Ronti Gad to Sangla. The trail winds through beautiful pine forests and offers stunning views of the Kinner Kailash range. The descent is gentle on your knees, allowing you to soak in the beauty of Sangla Valley without physical strain.
As you approach Sangla, you'll notice a gradual reentry into civilisation, with apple orchards and terraced fields appearing alongside the trail. Sangla, a picturesque town in Kinnaur district, marks the endpoint of your trekking adventure.
From Sangla, our Escape2Explore team arranges transportation back to your next destination, whether it's Shimla, Chandigarh, or elsewhere as per your travel plans. As you bid farewell to the mountains, you carry with you memories of an exceptional journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Himalayas.
The Rupin Pass Trek falls into the moderate-difficult category of Himalayan treks, requiring a good level of physical fitness. At Escape2Explore, we recommend preparing for at least 2-3 months before embarking on this adventure. Your preparation should include:
Cardiovascular exercises like running, swimming, or cycling for 30-45 minutes at least 4 times a week
Regular stair climbing to build leg strength and endurance
Lower body strength training focusing on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves
Core strengthening exercises to improve balance on uneven terrain
Practice hikes with a loaded backpack to simulate trekking conditions
Remember that the Rupin Pass Trek involves walking for 6-7 hours daily on varied terrain, with significant altitude gain. The better your physical condition, the more you'll enjoy the journey instead of struggling through it.
Understanding altitude acclimatisation is crucial for a safe and enjoyable Rupin Pass experience. The trek takes you from approximately 6,800 feet to 15,380 feet in just six days, which gives your body limited time to adjust to the decreasing oxygen levels.
At Escape2Explore, we design our itinerary with proper acclimatisation in mind, incorporating rest days and gradual altitude gains. However, trekkers should also take personal responsibility by:
Staying well-hydrated throughout the trek (at least 4-5 litres of water daily)
Avoiding alcohol and tobacco before and during the trek
Moving at a steady pace without rushing
Informing guides immediately about any symptoms of altitude sickness
Taking prescribed medication if recommended by your physician
Remember that altitude affects everyone differently, regardless of physical fitness or previous trekking experience. Listening to your body and communicating openly with your trek leaders about how you're feeling is essential.

If the Rupin Pass Trek is your first foray into Himalayan trekking, you might wonder what daily life on the trail entails. Here's a glimpse into the trekking experience with Escape2Explore:
Your day typically begins early, around 5:30 AM, with a wake-up call accompanied by a hot cup of tea delivered to your tent. After freshening up, you'll enjoy a hearty breakfast in the dining tent while the support team packs up the camping equipment.
The day's trek usually starts between 7:30 and 8:00 AM, taking advantage of the morning's stable weather conditions. You'll walk at a steady pace with regular breaks for rest, hydration, and photography. Our trek leaders set a sustainable pace that accommodates different fitness levels while ensuring everyone reaches the destination safely.
Lunch is served either at a scenic spot along the trail or at the next campsite, depending on the day's distance. After reaching the day's destination, you'll have time to rest, explore the surroundings, or engage in informal discussions with fellow trekkers and guides.
Evenings involve a briefing session about the next day's plan, followed by dinner and social time. As darkness falls over the mountains, you'll retire to your tent, lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature.
The Himalayan weather can be unpredictable, with conditions sometimes changing rapidly at higher altitudes. On the Rupin Pass Trek, you might experience:
Warm, sunny days with temperatures reaching 20°C, especially in the lower valleys
Cold mornings and evenings with temperatures around 5-10°C
Near-freezing or below-freezing nights at higher camps
Possibility of sudden rain showers or snowfall, particularly at higher altitudes
Strong winds near the pass and exposed sections
The key to comfortable trekking lies in layering. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating mid-layers that can be removed as you warm up, and always carry a waterproof outer layer for protection against unexpected precipitation.
Even with proper preparation, you might face challenges during the Rupin Pass Trek. Our Escape2Explore team is trained to help you overcome these:
Physical Fatigue: Pacing yourself, proper nutrition, and adequate hydration can prevent excessive fatigue. Our guides monitor everyone's condition and adjust the pace accordingly.
Altitude-Related Issues: Headaches, mild nausea, or difficulty sleeping are common at higher altitudes. Our acclimatisation protocol and regular health checks help manage these symptoms before they develop into serious problems.
Mental Challenges: Long days of trekking can sometimes test your mental resilience. Group camaraderie, motivational support from guides, and focusing on the journey rather than just the destination help overcome mental barriers.
Varying Weather Conditions: Being prepared with appropriate gear and following guide recommendations about timing and pacing helps manage changing weather conditions effectively.
The Rupin Pass Trek falls in the moderate-difficult category and is not recommended for absolute beginners. However, if you have some prior trekking experience in mountains (not necessarily the Himalayas) and follow a dedicated fitness preparation routine, you can certainly take on this challenge. At Escape2Explore, we recommend starting with an easier Himalayan trek before attempting the Rupin Pass if you're new to high-altitude trekking.
Throughout the Rupin Pass Trek, accommodation is in high-quality double-sharing tents. Each campsite has separate toilet tents and a common dining tent where meals are served. The camping equipment is carried and set up by our support team, allowing you to focus on enjoying the trek without logistical concerns.
Escape2Explore provides three freshly prepared meals daily, along with evening snacks and constant availability of hot beverages. Our menu balances nutrition, energy requirements, and taste preferences, featuring a mix of Indian, Continental, and local Himalayan cuisines.
For water, our team collects water from mountain streams and treats it with purification methods to ensure safety. Trekkers are advised to carry personal water bottles with a minimum capacity of 2 litres.
The day of crossing Rupin Pass is certainly the most challenging part of the trek. It involves an early start (often before sunrise), steep ascent through snow fields, navigating the pass itself, and then a long descent to the campsite. The total walking time can be 9-10 hours, requiring both physical endurance and mental determination.
However, our Escape2Explore guides provide technical assistance where needed, set a manageable pace, and ensure everyone crosses safely. The sense of achievement upon completing this challenge more than compensates for the effort expended.
Mobile network connectivity is available in Dhaula at the start of the trek and Sangla at the end, with limited or no connectivity in between. We recommend informing your family and friends about this situation before starting the trek.
For charging electronic devices, we suggest carrying power banks with sufficient capacity for the entire duration. While our team carries solar chargers for emergency communications, these are primarily reserved for safety equipment.
At Escape2Explore, we welcome trekkers between 15 and 60 years for the Rupin Pass Trek, provided they meet the fitness requirements and have no medical conditions that might be aggravated at high altitudes. For trekkers under 18, we require a consent form signed by parents or guardians.
We've had successful completion of the trek by people in their late 50s, proving that age is less important than preparation, determination, and a positive attitude.
