Tucked in the calm Tirthan Valley of Himachal Pradesh, the Pundrik Lake Trek is a real find for those who love nature, crave adventure, and seek peace. More wild than many known Himalayan treks, this path takes you deep into thick pine woods, green fields, and clear alpine views. The lake is viewed as holy and is very important to the folks here. With tall trees and snowy peaks far off, the quiet of Pundrik Lake brings a deep sense of peace and awe that's tough to describe. The walk starts from the small, pretty village of Nagini, close to the Great Himalayan National Park. From there, the path goes through oak and deodar woods, passes tiny Himalayan homes, fresh water streams, and bright plants. Lying at about 2,400 meters high, Pundrik Lake is not a tough climb but is easy enough for new hikers and families, too. The whole trek lasts about 4–5 hours in one way and can be done in one day, but staying overnight near the lake is special because of the starry sky above. A key part of Pundrik Lake Trek is how it mixes natural beauty with deep cultural respect. Named after the wise Pundrik Rishi, the lake is a place of great importance, and visitors are asked not to touch or spoil its waters. This care helps keep the lake beautiful. The path is also full of birds and lets you see Himalayan monals, pheasants, and other types. Perfect for a short trip to the Himalayas, the Pundrik Lake Trek gives you lovely views, light adventure, and a touch of deep meaning.
Pundrik Lake, in the Tirthan Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is not just a spot of great beauty but also has big stories and cultural worth. The quiet lake gets its name from Rishi Pundrik, a widely honoured, clean, wise man believed to have lived quietly in this place. The lake and its area have long been important for the local people, and old tales still shape their culture and ways today. According to local stories, Pundrik Rishi was a true follower of Lord Vishnu. He picked this quiet, untouched spot for his deep thoughts and prayers. Legends say his spiritual power was so strong that even gods came to this place, making it a holy spot. For many years, the lake has been seen as pure and divine, and many locals think its waters can heal and cleanse. Unlike other lakes in the hills, touching or spoiling the lake is not allowed, showing respect for the wise man’s devotion and the place’s holiness. For a long time, the area around Pundrik Lake has been low-key and far off, known only to local folks, monks, and those looking for spiritual peace. It’s only lately that hikers and explorers have started to come here, pulled by its quiet feel and rich culture. Despite more people coming, the lake is still mainly untouched by big change, with strong local habits keeping it safe.
The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that covers the path to Pundrik Lake, adds more history and nature importance. The park was made in the late 20th century to preserve the unique nature and old ways of life in the region. Because of this, the path to Pundrik Lake is part of a protected area, with rules to keep both its natural honour and spiritual sides safe. Local people still hold festivals and rites by the lake on special days. Here, they gather near (but not in) the water, make offerings, and honour local gods. These acts show the strong tie between the Himalayan people and their land. In short, the story of Pundrik Lake is a mix of old tales, spiritual life, and living with nature. It’s more than just a place; it’s a way of respecting purity, deep regard, and living together with nature. As more folks find this hidden spot, the focus is on careful and respectful travel, making sure the lake keeps giving inspiration and healing, as it has for ages.
Tirthan Valley: Close to the Pundrik Lake Trek start, Tirthan Valley offers lovely views, trout fishing, and stays by the river. Named after its river, it's a door to the Great Himalayan National Park. Great for walks, birdwatching, and local life.
Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP): A UNESCO site, GHNP has lots of plants, animals like the Himalayan tahr, snow leopard, and 300 kinds of birds. It has many trek paths and is a top spot for nature fans. The Pundrik Lake trek goes near this park.
Jalori Pass: Around 30 km from Tirthan Valley, Jalori Pass stands at 10,800 feet high. It starts treks to Serolsar Lake and Raghupur Fort. You can see the Himalayas here, and the plant life is rich - a good spot for a day out.
Serolsar Lake: From Jalori Pass, you can reach Serolsar Lake, a high and holy lake set in thick oak woods. It’s clear and clean as locals care for it deeply. It links to the goddess Budhi Nagin and is calm for a quick walk.
Shoja Village: Near Jalori Pass, Shoja is small yet stunning, with great views, forests, and pure beauty. It's best for those seeking peace and a deep link with the mountains. Shoja has short hikes and lets you watch birds.
Chehni Kothi: In Chehni village, this old tower temple of stone and wood stands without cement or iron. It was once a fort but is now a temple for Lord Shringa Rishi. A walk here from Gushaini is also scenic.
Gushaini: As a start for many treks in Tirthan Valley, Gushaini is a calm riverside spot. It’s known for fishing and being calm, perfect for a trek base. Homes here show local culture.
Spring (March to May): Spring sparks life on the trail with blooming flowers, fresh greenery, and nice weather. Snow melts, showing rich fields and clear skies. Days are warm, nights cool - a fresh time in the mountains.
Summer (June to Early July): Early summer is also good here, away from the hot plains. Days are cool, clear, showing valleys and peaks well. A great choice for families and first-timers, as paths are dry and comfy.
Monsoon (Mid-July to August): Usually, the monsoon is not the best for the Pundrik Lake Trek. Rain makes trails slippery, risks of slides and leeches too. While the forest turns extra green, fog hides the views. Bold trekkers ready for rain might still go.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is likely the top time for Pundrik Lake. After the rains, the skies clear, the air and views are sharp, and the woods are full of colour. Birds are easy to spot, and the sunsets and sunrises are stunning.
Winter (December to February): Winter brings snow; paths may close from snow cover. If the path is clear, it's a snowy dream spot. Only go if ready for the cold and with the right winter things, as it can get very cold and tough.
By Airport: The closest airport to Pundrik Lake is Bhuntar Airport (Kullu-Manali Airport), 50 km from the Tirthan Valley. From here, you can book a taxi or ride a bus to get to Nagini or Gushaini, where the trek starts. Few flights go to Bhuntar, so you might look at flying to Chandigarh (250 km) for more flight options, then go on by road.
By Railway Station: The nearest big train stop is Chandigarh Railway Station, about 250 km from Tirthan Valley. In Chandigarh, grab a cab or catch a bus to Aut, a small place close to the valley. From Aut, you can find local rides or cabs to go to Nagini or Gushaini. You can also think of the Joginder Nagar Railway Station, but it's less used since it's a small track and not as good for most.
By Road: Roads link well to Tirthan Valley, making it simple to get to the Pundrik Lake Trek's start point by car or bus. Most drive via Mandi – Aut – Banjar – Nagini/Gushaini. Buses and shared cabs often run from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Manali to Aut. From Aut, you can keep going to Nagini or Gushaini by taxi or bus. The drive gives good views, more so from the Aut.
