The Nandi Kund Trek is a high-altitude Himalayan trail in Uttarakhand, leading to the sacred Nandi Kund lake at an altitude of 4,800 meters. It offers stunning views of the Chaukhamba and Mandani peaks, alpine meadows, ancient mythological routes, and an immersive experience through Garhwal’s remote villages and forests. It's ideal for trekkers seeking nature and spirituality.
The trek is graded as moderate to difficult, stretching over 8–10 days depending on your itinerary. It involves long walking hours, steep ascents, and high-altitude camping. Prior trekking experience and good fitness are highly recommended. The effort is rewarded with surreal views, peaceful campsites, and a sense of deep accomplishment.
The ideal months for this trek are June to mid-July and September to October. During these windows, the weather is stable, the trails are clear of snow, and the views are spectacular. Monsoon months should be avoided due to landslides, and winters bring extreme cold and heavy snowfall, making the trail inaccessible.
What sets Nandi Kund apart is its spiritual and mythological significance. The lake is believed to be the bathing spot of Lord Shiva’s bull, Nandi. Along with epic mountain views, you'll also pass through historical trails, temples, and stories rooted in the Mahabharata. It’s not just a trek—it's a soulful journey through ancient land.
The trek usually starts from Kund or Ukhimath, accessible by road from Rishikesh or Haridwar. The nearest railway station is Haridwar, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. From there, a scenic drive through the Garhwal region takes you to the trek base. Most packages include pickup and transfer options.
Accommodation during the trek is typically in tents, offering basic but comfortable shelter in scenic locations. At the base villages like Kund or Ransi, you may stay in homestays or lodges. The camping experience is raw yet beautiful—sleeping under starlit skies, surrounded by nature, and away from city noise.
Meals are usually simple and nutritious vegetarian fare—think dal, rice, vegetables, chapatis, and hot soup. Breakfasts include porridge, bread, or parathas. The goal is to keep you energized for trekking while also being easy to digest. Some treks also include local Garhwali dishes for an authentic taste of the region.
Network coverage is extremely limited on the trail. You may get weak signals at lower altitudes or base villages, but expect to be disconnected for most of the trek. This digital detox is actually part of the charm—offering you a chance to truly unplug and reconnect with nature.
Yes, altitude sickness can affect trekkers as the trek goes above 4,000 meters. Acclimatization is built into the itinerary, and staying hydrated, walking slowly, and avoiding alcohol helps manage symptoms. Inform your guide if you feel unwell. It’s essential to listen to your body and not push too hard.
Pack warm layers, a good down jacket, thermals, trekking boots, a raincoat, gloves, a cap, a headlamp, personal medicines, and a reusable water bottle. Sunscreen and sunglasses are must-haves due to high-altitude exposure. Avoid overpacking but make sure you’re ready for rapidly changing weather in the Himalayas.
Charging options are limited or unavailable during the actual trek. It's best to carry power banks or solar chargers. Some homestays at the base may offer charging before the trek begins. Conserve battery by turning off mobile data and keeping your phone in airplane mode to last through the journey.
Yes, you can join the trek to Devalsari Trek. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.

The Nandi Kunda Trek is a pure and lesser-known path in the Himalayas. It shows off stunning views, wild beauty, and a true wild feel. Found in the Kumaon area of Uttarakhand, this trek takes you to the icy lake of Nandi Kund, at the foot of the big Chaukhamba rock face. It's great for those who like quiet and raw Himalayan sights, far from busy paths. The walk starts with green fields, thick woods of oak, pine, and rhododendron, and then moves into high grass fields full of wildflowers in summer. The trek path gives wide views of big Himalayan peaks like Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Mandani Parvat. The bright Nandi Kund Lake, up high at about 4,800 meters, is seen as holy and linked to Lord Shiva’s mount, Nandi the bull. Hikers also cross old shepherd paths and small towns, where they see the Garhwali culture and way of life. The trek is somewhat tough, fitting for both skilled hikers and fit newcomers who seek a less common thrill. With clear skies, starry nights, and the calm of high wilds, the Nandi Kunda Trek mixes spirit, beauty, and thrill. For those longing to see hidden Himalayan jewels, this trek is an amazing trip into pure nature.
The story of the Nandi Kunda Trek ties deeply with Hindu tales, old trips, and the ways of the Garhwal Himalayas. The lake, Nandi Kund, holds big religious worth as it is thought to honour Nandi, the holy bull and close friend of Lord Shiva. By tale, the lake was a rest spot for Nandi during Lord Shiva’s sky trips. For ages, holy men and sages have come here, seeing it as a special place for thinking and spirit work. Long ago, the area around Nandi Kund was a key path for shepherds and traders who moved through the high meadows to get to other valleys. The close Mandani Valley, rich in tales, was once a pilgrimage path to Kedarnath. Old writings and local songs talk of the magic feel of these fields, said to be blessed by the gods. The trek’s old roots also connect with the Mahabharata, where many think that the Pandavas took these paths on their last trip to the Himalayas, known as the Mahaprasthan. Old stone works, temple ruins, and holy spots along the trek path back up the long spiritual meaning of this trail.
For the local Garhwali folk, Nandi Kund is not just a lake but a mark of culture and faith. Each year, shepherds have rites here, mainly those who feed their herds in the high meadows. They trust that saying prayers at the lake keeps their cattle safe and brings good luck. In modern times, the Nandi Kunda Trek has become known among trek fans as a fresh pick to more well-known paths. Yet, even with more people coming, it stays pure and charming. Hikers not only see big peak views like Chaukhamba, Mandani, and Nanda Ghunti but also walk through a land full of ages of tales and cultural ways. So, the story of Nandi Kunda mixes tales, trips, and local roots, making it more than just a trek. It is a trip that links nature, spirit, and history, giving each traveller a chance to follow the sacred steps of time.
Kedarnath Temple: Kedarnath Temple, a holy place in India, stands near the trekking area and pays tribute to Lord Shiva. High up at 3,583 meters, the temple is set among snow-covered hills and is very important in religion. People visiting often mix their trip to Nandi Kund with a stop at Kedarnath for a true soul-touching time.
Mandani Valley: Close to the path, Mandani Valley is a stunning spot full of green fields, wildflowers, and snow-topped hills. This valley is also tied to Goddess Durga in old tales. Walkers in Mandani Valley see calm beauty, high green fields, and simple huts used by shepherds.
Madhmaheshwar Temple: Madhmaheshwar, another important shrine for Lord Shiva, lies in a pretty valley with lots of green and snowy hills. At a high spot of 3,497 meters, this temple is a key part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage. Its far place and holy feel make it a must-go near Nandi Kunda.
Chopta (Mini Switzerland of India): Chopta, known as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” is a lovely hill stop not too far from the trek start. It’s ringed by thick trees and opens the way to Tungnath and Chandrashila. Its peaceful scenes, fields, and birds make it a top pick for those who love nature.
Tungnath and Chandrashila Peak: Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is near Chopta and is much revered. A short walk up from Tungnath takes you to Chandrashila Peak (about 4,000 meters), showing wide views of big mountains like Nanda Devi and Trishul. This is a great extra spot for those exploring Nandi Kunda.
Ukhimath: In winter, when the snow shuts down Kedarnath and Madhmaheshwar temples, Ukhimath becomes their home. The town thrives with spiritual power and hosts many old temples. It offers a mix of culture, history, and devotion.
Summer (May – June): Summer is a top time for the Nandi Kunda Trek. The snow melts, showing fresh green fields, bright flowers, and clear paths. Days are nice and cool, right for walking. Now is also great for taking photos, as the skies are clear, showing sharp views of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Trishul.
Monsoon (July – September): Rain comes during these months, making paths slick and prone to slides. Though the land looks bright and new, walking now is not wise due to risks. But, after the rains in late September, the views turn very lovely with fresh streams, falls, and clean air.
Autumn (October – November): Fall is another fine time for this trek. The air is sharp and clear, making mountain sights even sharper. Fields turn gold, woods glow with fall colours, and the skies stay mostly without clouds. This time also has many local events in the towns near the walk.
Winter (December – April): Winter turns Nandi Kunda into a land of snow. The lake and paths might freeze, offering a stunning but tough walk. The cold gets very low, good only for those who know cold treks. For those wanting quiet and an icy mountain trip, winter walks are good but need the right gear and plans.
By Airport: The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 220 km from the start of the trek. It has flights from Delhi and other big cities. From Dehradun, you can take a taxi or a bus to towns like Ukhimath or Gopeshwar, which start the trek.
By Railway Station: The nearest train stop is Rishikesh Station, about 200 km from Ukhimath/Gopeshwar. Rishikesh links well to Delhi, Haridwar, and other northern cities. From Rishikesh, you can get shared jeeps, taxis, or buses going towards Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, or Gopeshwar before starting the walk.
By Road: You can get to the trek base by road from big towns in Uttarakhand. Buses from Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun go to places like Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, and Gopeshwar. From these towns, local jeeps or taxis bring walkers to the path start. The road ride is long but shows lovely towns, mountain valleys, and places where holy rivers meet, like Alaknanda and Mandakini.
