Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition all about?
The Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition is a high-altitude Himalayan trek leading to the summit of Nanda Ghunti (6,309 meters) in Uttarakhand. It’s ideal for seasoned trekkers who crave a mix of adventure, technical climbing, and stunning alpine views. The trail offers glaciers, rocky ridges, and snow-covered routes, making it a challenging yet rewarding expedition.
Q2: Is previous mountaineering experience necessary for this expedition?
Yes, prior mountaineering or high-altitude trekking experience is essential. Nanda Ghunti is not a beginner-friendly peak; the terrain includes steep snowfields, icy slopes, and crevasse zones. Familiarity with gear like crampons, ice axes, and ropework is highly recommended. This ensures both your safety and your ability to adapt to the demanding environment.
Q3: What’s the best time to do the Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition?
The ideal months for the Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition are May to June and September to October. These windows offer clearer skies, stable weather, and safer snow conditions. Monsoons and winters bring heavy snowfall and unpredictable weather, which can hinder movement and visibility on high-altitude routes.
Q4: How many days does the expedition take?
The Nanda Ghunti expedition typically takes 18 to 21 days, including acclimatization days and buffer days for summit attempts. The trek begins from Lohajung, moving through Didna, Bedni Bugyal, Bhagwabasa, and finally toward Base Camp before summit push. It's essential to pace the trek properly for acclimatization and safety.
Q5: What kind of physical fitness is required for this expedition?
Trekkers should have excellent cardiovascular endurance, strength, and stamina. This includes being able to walk 6–8 hours daily on steep inclines carrying a daypack. Pre-expedition prep should include hiking, running, strength training, and altitude training if possible. Strong fitness reduces risks of altitude sickness and improves your overall experience.
Q6: Will mobile networks work during the expedition?
Mobile networks are generally available only till Lohajung or Didna. Once you ascend further, there will be no signal throughout the trail, especially beyond Bedni Bugyal and the base camp. It's best to inform family in advance and carry a satellite phone or use the operator’s communication system for emergencies.
Q7: What kind of food is served during the expedition?
The food is nutritious and designed to support high-altitude energy needs. Expect simple, hot meals like khichdi, rice, dal, chapati, vegetables, and soups. Breakfasts include porridge, eggs, bread, and tea. Energy bars and dry fruits are usually provided. Meals are vegetarian, and cooked fresh by the expedition support crew.
Q8: What happens in case of altitude sickness?
If a participant shows signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), they are immediately moved to lower altitude and monitored. Oxygen cylinders, basic first aid, and medications like Diamox are carried. Safety is prioritized over summit attempts, and decisions are made by the trek leader or expedition doctor if present.
Q9: Do we get porters or mules to carry our luggage?
Yes, mules or porters are available to carry the bulk of your gear up to a certain altitude (usually till Base Camp). However, you’re expected to carry a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, a jacket, and personal items. This arrangement allows you to trek more comfortably and avoid overexertion.
Q10: Is the Nanda Ghunti Expedition suitable for solo travelers?
Absolutely! Solo trekkers often join organized expeditions, becoming part of a larger team. It’s a great way to meet like-minded adventurers while staying safe under the guidance of experienced trek leaders. However, solo trekking without a team is not advisable due to the remote terrain and technical nature of the peak.
Q11: What kind of gear is required for this expedition?
Technical mountaineering gear is a must. This includes crampons, harness, helmet, ice axe, gaiters, snow boots, and carabiners. Personal gear includes thermal clothing, a down jacket, trekking shoes, gloves, and sunglasses. Many operators provide or rent technical gear, but personal clothing and footwear should be high quality and weather-proof.
Q12: I am a solo traveller, can I join the Nanda Ghunti Peak?
Yes, you can join the trek to Nanda Ghunti Peak. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
Q13: Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition is safe for females?

Our trip leaders always accompany the group, offering constant assistance and direction. Our campsites are thoroughly secure and provide a safe lodging environment. Blog - Nanda Ghunti Peak Expedition: A Quick Guide
The Nanda Ghunti Peak Trip is a great walk into the middle of the Garhwal Himalayas, giving climbers a shot to top one of India's top peaks at 6,309 meters (20,699 ft). It sits in the Chamoli area of Uttarakhand, close to the well-known Nanda Devi Place, making a cool sky line with the tops of Trishul and Nanda Devi. The name “Nanda Ghunti” means “Veil of the Goddess Nanda,” and the hill is famed for its sharp, snow-rich sides and hard paths, loved by top climbers. The trip starts from Lohajung, going by small towns, green high lands, and thick woods with rhododendrons and oak trees, then out into big ice beds. This path has great looks of the Ronti Ice, Ronti Saddle, and the high hills near. Climbers take on rock, ice, and snow climbs, with fast changes in weather, calling for great skills, stamina, and time to get used to high places. The walk is also a chance to see old ways of mountain life in far-off places. People might see wild animals, from mountain goats to rare birds. The climb up Nanda Ghunti is seen as a warm-up for harder high trips, giving both hard climbs and pure wild beauty. With its mix of nature's big show, deep links to old ways, and the rush of climbing, the Nanda Ghunti Peak Trip is a must-do for climbers worldwide, offering a top but an epic trip into the world of the goddess.History of Nanda Ghunti Peak ExpeditionThe story of Nanda Ghunti Peak is tied to old tales, ways of life, and the great past of climbs in the Garhwal Himalayas. The name “Nanda Ghunti” points to “Veil of the Goddess Nanda,” about the god Nanda Devi, who is seen as the guard of the place. Story says, the hill acts as a gate or wall to the holy Nanda Devi Place, hiding it from those not fit to see. This deep meaning has made the hill not just a big sight but also a sign of love and high thought for the people of Uttarakhand. In its climb past, Nanda Ghunti is known as one of the hard hills of the Indian Himalayas. The first known top climb was in 1947 by a Swiss team led by André Roch, with Indian climbers too, marking a big point in Himalayan trips after the war, showing both skills in climbing and working across lands. The climb took on steep snow, ice walls, and sharp edges—hard parts for climbers even now.For years, the hill has pulled trips from India and afar, each adding to its story of climbs. Some teams made it to the top, others had to turn back due to bad weather, snow slides, or hard ice. The Ronti Saddle path, linking Nanda Ghunti with Trishul, is also a key climb and thrill for climbers. As well as its climb story, Nanda Ghunti is a key mark in the local ways. Every twelve years, during the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, a big trip goes by near its foot, honoring the goddess and keeping the hill's holy feel. Today, the Nanda Ghunti Peak Trip is a high climb for skilled climbers, mixing rich old ways with tough climbs. The path tests both body power and skills and looks deep into the spirit of the Himalayas. Its story keeps pulling climbers, walkers, and faithful people, making it both a hard climb and a lasting mark of Himalayas' grand look.Nearby Places around Nanda Ghunti Peak ExpeditionRoopkund Lake: Set up high at around 5,029 meters, Roopkund is often called "Skeleton Lake" as it's full of old bones at its base. It sits among high, snow-topped hills, showing a hidden but eye-catching view. It's a path often picked by those going through the Nanda Ghunti area.Bedni Bugyal: One of the big high-grass fields in Asia, Bedni Bugyal is full of green and blooms in the summer. It has great wide views of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and other big hills. This place is also a key rest stop on the way to Roopkund and a centre for local events.Wan Village: A small hill town, Wan Village is loved for its old wood homes, cut farms, and the kind hearts of its people. It's where many set off on hikes to Roopkund, Bedni Bugyal, and Nanda Ghunti. The village shows the plain but rich life of the hill folks.Ronti Saddle: Right between Nanda Ghunti and Trishul, Ronti Saddle is a high hill pass with great views of nearby ice and peaks. With strong rules to keep it untouched, it shows wild nature and is part of the holy Nanda Devi Sanctuary, linked to Nanda Ghunti.Best Times to VisitBefore Rainy Season (May to June): May and June are great for the Nanda Ghunti Peak climb as the weather stays calm, with clear skies and mild warmth up high. Old winter snow stays, giving good climb spots and pretty white views. The lower fields also burst with bright flowers, making the walk there very pretty. After Rainy Season (September to October): The time from September to mid-October is another good time for climbing. Rain would have made the air clear, showing sharp views of the peaks. It gets colder and snow builds up high, making a clean and tough area for climbers. This time has fewer risks of snow falls than late winter.Rainy and Deep Winter: The rainy months of July and August bring lots of rain, making paths slick, leading to slides, and more risks of snow falls up high. Also, deep winter from November to April has really cold weather, heavy snow, and lots of storms, making climbs too hard and full of risks. These times are often not chosen unless by very good climbers on special winter trips. How to ReachBy Airport: The nearest air stop to the Nanda Ghunti area is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, about 280–300 km from Lohajung, the main start spot for the climb. This airport connects to big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From Dehradun, you can take a taxi or shared cab to Lohajung, a 9–10 hour road trip with pretty hill views.By Train: The nearest big train stops are Rishikesh (about 260 km) and Kathgodam (around 210 km). Both are well linked with Delhi and other places up north. From these stops, you can catch a taxi or a local bus to Lohajung. The Kathgodam path is often liked for its shorter travel time and smoother roads through Almora and Gwaldam.By Road: Lohajung, where you start for the Nanda Ghunti Peak climb, has good road links to big towns in Uttarakhand. Direct buses and shared taxis are there from Rishikesh, Kathgodam, and Haldwani.
