Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the Mayali Pass Trek known for?
The Mayali Pass Trek is renowned for its high-altitude mountain pass (5,000+ meters), breathtaking glaciers, and spiritual sites like Kedarnath and Vasuki Tal. It offers both natural beauty and mythological relevance, making it a perfect blend of adventure and spirituality. Remote trails and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks define this unique trekking experience.
Q2: How difficult is the Mayali Pass Trek?
The Mayali Pass Trek is rated difficult and best suited for seasoned trekkers. The trail involves glacier crossings, steep ascents, long trekking hours, and camping at high altitudes. Physical endurance and mental preparation are crucial, as the route demands a consistent pace and the ability to adapt to unpredictable mountain weather.
Q3: What’s the best time of year to do the Mayali Pass Trek?
The ideal time for the Mayali Pass Trek is May–June and September–mid-October. These months offer clear skies, moderate snow levels, and stable weather. Monsoon (July–August) brings dangerous conditions with landslides, while winter makes the trail inaccessible due to heavy snow. The trek’s beauty is best revealed in these short seasonal windows.
Q4: Is prior trekking experience required for Mayali Pass?
Yes, this is not a beginner-friendly trek. Due to the altitude (up to 5,300 meters) and glaciated paths, prior experience with multi-day high-altitude treks is highly recommended. A good understanding of acclimatization, camping, and basic mountaineering techniques ensures a safer and more enjoyable journey across the challenging terrain.
Q5: How many days does it take to complete the Mayali Pass Trek?
The trek typically takes 9–10 days, including arrival and acclimatization. The itinerary covers Sersi or Gaurikund to Kedarnath, Vasuki Tal, Mayali Pass, and then descent towards Ghuttu. Daily trekking ranges from 6 to 10 kilometers through rough, high-altitude terrain. The schedule includes adequate time for rest and gradual altitude gain.
Q6: What makes Mayali Pass Trek spiritually significant?
The trek traverses mythologically rich regions associated with Lord Shiva. It starts near Kedarnath and continues toward Vasuki Tal, both of which are revered pilgrimage sites. According to legend, this was the route taken by the Pandavas to reach heaven. The trek allows both physical exploration and spiritual reflection in the Himalayas.
Q7: Do I need any special permits for this trek?
Yes, since the trail runs through protected regions and near the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, trekkers require forest entry permits and ID verification. If you’re traveling with a trekking operator, they usually arrange all necessary permits. Always carry ID copies and keep digital backups in case of checkpoints along the trail.
Q8: What’s the maximum altitude reached on this trek?
The highest point on the Mayali Pass Trek is the Mayali Pass itself, which sits at approximately 5,300 meters (17,388 feet). Trekkers also cross other high points like Vasuki Tal (4,978 m). Proper acclimatization is critical at these elevations to avoid symptoms of altitude sickness and ensure a successful summit.
Q9: What kind of landscapes can I expect to see?
Expect an incredible variety—from dense forests and alpine meadows to snow-covered ridges, high-altitude lakes, and glacier crossings. Notable highlights include Vasuki Tal, the Khatling Glacier, and the views of Thalay Sagar and Meru peaks. The changing terrain each day keeps the trek engaging and visually rewarding.
Q10: How are the campsites on the Mayali Pass Trek?
Campsites are located at scenic yet remote spots, such as Vasuki Tal, Chowki, and Khatling Glacier base. They offer a rugged camping experience with tents, sleeping bags, and basic toilet arrangements. These serene high-altitude camps provide a rare opportunity to sleep under star-filled skies surrounded by the towering Himalayas.
Q11: Are there any villages on the trek route?
After Kedarnath, the route becomes remote with no inhabited villages. However, earlier sections like Sersi and Ghuttu have small settlements. The isolation beyond Kedarnath means all supplies must be carried, and communication becomes minimal. It’s a trek for those seeking solitude, self-sufficiency, and immersion in wild Himalayan terrain.
Q12: I am a solo traveller, can I join the Mayali Pass Trek?
Yes, you can join the trek to Mayali Pass. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.

Blog - Mayali Pass Trek: A Quick Guide
The Mayali Pass Trek is among the most exciting as well as the spiritually significant Himalayan treks that can be found in the Garhwal area of Uttarakhand. With a height of about 5,000 meters, the trek basically links the holy places of Kedarnath and Gangotri and thus, provides a unique confluence of adventure, divine nature, and spiritual-cultural importance. It is also called the trek of mysticism because it introduces the explorers to the legendary paths of the saints and the devotees who have made the pilgrimage to the shrines. Mayali Pass Trek has a very enticing trail that passes through a variety of landscapes ranging from verdant meadows to alpine forests and even to sparkling glaciers. Besides, the trail offers splendid views of Thalay Sagar, Kedardome, and the whole Gangotri group of mountains. It is a hardcore trek and requires physical fitness, the thrill of the adventure, and the experience of high-altitude trekking. At the same time, the highlight of the trip is indeed the crossing of Mayali Pass, where, amidst a snow-clad world and ravishing valleys, one stands feeling absolutely unbeaten. What makes the trek even more attractive is the fact that it goes through spots such as Vasuki Tal, a very clean glacial lake holding a very important position in Hindu mythology and the far-off village of Ghuttu, where the trekkers have the opportunity to come into direct contact with the Garhwali people and their very own traditions. The route along the way is dotted with several other beautiful spots like Masar Tal and Tevra Tal, which add to the trekker’s pleasure and make it a nice trek not only for nature lovers and those on spiritual quests but also for those who like adventures of both kinds equally. The Mayali Pass Trek is definitely not only the one that refers to the physical exploration but also the one that highlights the person's ability to commune with nature and mythology on a deeper level. Its difficult terrain, heavenly lakes, and divine connections make this trek the ultimate lifetime experience for people who are a part of neither the adventure nor the spiritual fraternity.History of the Mayali Pass TrekThe Mayali Pass Trek is one of the Garhwal Himalayas marvels, with the trek being a representation of the legends of the Hindu religion of the Garhwal Himalayas and mythical stories. It is also a path of ancient pilgrims and rishis by their spiritual expedition to the most holy shrines in the world, Kedarnath and Gangotri. And this has been the case, till this day, not only because people had gone there for quite some time, but also because the Mayali Pass area and other neighbouring sites along this trek were considered spiritually significant places. Thus, it is the difficult, yet next-level crossing of these uncharted pass routes and the merging of holy locations that make it such an important pilgrimage route, along with being an adventurous trek. One of the main reasons this holds in the eco and trek world is the story of Shiva residing in theEVEREST Himalayas, and that the several-acre water bodies and peaks in the Mayali Pass Trek are sacred to it. The tale behind each place on this trekking route is as if gods were once there doing their everyday things, like sleeping on the serpent Vasuki (which is the scene they pictured this place for Lord Vishnu) and meditating very devotedly, thus, we come across the Land of Penance and Meditation for the same place. The main issue of the story is their transition through oral traditions, and even local communities are known to be very faithful, as the sites they live are the dwelling/base of divine entities. The meaning of "Mayali" is itself very much related to the mystical aspects of it. The people who live there consider the gap to be the greatest symbolising the connection between man and the divine gods. The way crossing the Mayali Pass is regarded not only as a physical accomplishment but also as a spiritual journey, a means of testing one’s faith, willpower, and humbleness in front of the great Himalayas. Because of the difficult trek and the remoteness of the location, the route historically was not very popular among regular trekkers. Compared to other trails going to popular Uttarakhand tourist places such as Kedarkantha and Valley of Flowers, Mayali Pass had always been unknown to the public until the last few decades. Anyhow, shepherds, pilgrims and ascetics usually frequented the area as they were looking for a quiet place for meditation and atonement in the remote Himalayas, which is why they often used this route. The Mayali Pass Trek is now receiving more and more recognition as modern trekking opens. It has become a favourite among mountaineers and explorers who are looking for difficult routes that combine raw nature and cultural richness. It’s not just challenging that trekkers from all around the world, it is also beautiful, and it is this mixture of being beautiful as well as being historically one of the difficult treks in the Garhwal region, which makes it so special among the Himalayan treks. Presently, the Mayali Pass Trek forms an inseparable whole between Mythology and the desire to see it with ones own eyes/experience it. The trek is still rich with history are gods and myth, but now the link with history is not only through the legends but also the pilgrims who trekked in the area and the local inhabitants who live in the region and who believe in the divine.Nearby Places to Mayali Pass TrekKedarnath Temple: Only a short distance from the trekking route, Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and an essential pilgrimage destination of the Char Dham Yatra. At more than 3,583 meters high, the temple is surrounded by crystal-like snow-capped peaks and provides a very peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. It is typical for trekkers to bring the Mayali Pass trip to a close with a visit to this holy place.Gangotri: Another important pilgrimage site, Gangotri, is the source of the holy River Ganga. It is one of the four Char Dham temples and thus, is worshipped the most. Alas! The journey from Mayali Pass to Gangotri is challenging, but it is spiritually rewarding as it brings us closer to two of the holiest shrines in Hinduism.Vasuki Tal: Vasuki Tal is a glacial lake of the high altitudes that lie on the way to the pass. Beautiful mountainous Vasuki Tal, with its eerie surroundings, is not only geologically stunning but also holds importance in mythology, as it is said that Lord Vishnu took rest here on the serpent Vasuki. Here you can have a great time camping.Masar Tal and Tevra Tal: The twin lakes can be found along with the Mayali Pass trail and are very few visitors, so they are tranquil and unspoiled. Those lakes have become a phenomenon because of their superclean waters and nice environment, but they still remain undiscovered from most people during the trek, and therefore, they also become a paradise for those who love Mother Nature and are passionate about taking amazing pictures.Ghuttu Village: Ghuttu acts as the base camp of the Mayali Pass Trek. It is a cutesy Garhwali village where trekkers have the opportunity to savour the local culture, see the traditional wooden houses and experience the warmth of the villagers. Apart from that, the village is also a cultural bond area before going deep into the wild nature of the Himalaya.Triyuginarayan Temple: Situated near Kedarnath, this temple is extremely significant from the point of view of history, for it is said that it was here where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. The fire that has been burning eternally in front of the temple is said to be the one that saw the divine marriage. The place is of great interest to both history buffs and pilgrims.Best Time to Visit Mayali Pass TrekSummer (May to June): Mayali Pass Trek is definitely the main point of my choice for summer to be spent in the best possible way. As the season progresses, the meltdown of the ice mass continues, and the passage becomes visible or accessible. The temperature is very good and ranges from 8°C to 15°C during the day. Besides, the grass is green, and the glacial lakes like Vasuki Tal & Masar Tal become more and more fascinating with a blue sky above. Having said that, trekkers should have their necessary gear ready for snow areas and cold nights.Post-Monsoon (September to October): The time right after the monsoon is the second perfect period when the Mayali Pass Trek could be done. Because the places are recharged with water from the recent downpours, the area is very fresh, vivid, and full of wildflowers. Most of the day, the sun shines through, the sky is clear, which creates the conditions for breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks such as Thalay Sagar, Kedar Dome, and the Gangotri group. The weather is very predictable, the days are cool, and the nights are cold, which is well for high altitude trekking. The timing is also perfect for photographers and filmmakers to capture the raw beauty of the Himalayas.Monsoon (July to August): Most trekkers believe that the monsoon trek is the last thing they want to do. This is mainly because heavy rains make the paths slippery. Besides, there is also the potential of landslides and rivers getting more water than they can handle, which in turn results in flooding. Moreover, the mountains cannot be seen because the peaks are covered with dense clouds. Even though the valleys are green and lively, the risks are greater than the beauty, making it an unpopular trekking destination.Winter (November to April): During winter, because of the heavy snow and very low temperatures, which can go as low as -10°C or even lower, the Mayali Pass Trek is not accessible. The area of the pass and the surroundings located there are fully covered with snow, which makes the trails both risky. The season is definitely not a perfect time for trekking unless you are a professional climber with the appropriate gear for the severe alpine conditions. How to Reach Mayali Pass TrekBy Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun, is the nearest airstrip to Mayali Pass Trek, around 210 km away from the trek base village, Ghuttu. Dehradun regularly connects with Delhi and other major Indian cities by several flights. From the airport, a taxi or bus can be taken to Rishikesh, followed by a taxi or bus to Ghuttu via Rishikesh and Uttarkashi, respectively.By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest large railhead, and Ghuttu is located 190 km away from there.
