Though the trek is of moderate difficulty, beginners with reasonable fitness can definitely take part. The route gradually gains altitude over 5–6 days, giving your body time to adjust. It’s a great introduction to high-altitude Himalayan trekking, with manageable distances and rewarding views.
Mobile network coverage is limited once you leave Pahalgam. You may get some signals at Aru Village depending on your provider, but don’t count on it during the rest of the trek. It's a good idea to inform loved ones in advance and enjoy a digital detox surrounded by the pristine beauty of the Kashmir Himalayas.
Yes! The trek begins from Aru, a charming village where you can interact with local Gujjar and Bakarwal communities. Their unique customs, clothing, and nomadic lifestyle offer a beautiful cultural immersion. It's a great opportunity to learn firsthand about traditional Himalayan living and hospitality.
You’ll be served simple, warm, vegetarian meals with a balance of carbs and proteins to sustain energy during trekking. Dishes often include rice, dal, chapatis, sabzi, and sometimes noodles or pasta. Meals are freshly prepared by the support team and often enjoyed with a stunning view of snow-capped peaks!
There is no electricity once the trek starts. It's advisable to carry a fully charged power bank and keep your phone on airplane mode to preserve battery. Enjoy the screen-free experience—nature here is far more beautiful than anything a phone screen can offer.
Nights can be chilly, especially near the Kolahoi Glacier base camp, where temperatures often drop close to freezing—even in summer. Make sure to pack a good-quality sleeping bag (rated for sub-zero conditions) and layer your clothing to stay warm and comfortable.
What sets this trek apart is the untouched beauty of Kashmir. From pine-scented forests and alpine meadows to the majestic Kolahoi Glacier at 3,400 m, the trail offers diverse landscapes and serene campsites. It’s a blend of scenic beauty, cultural encounters, and offbeat adventure rarely found in one trek.
Before or after the trek, you can shop in Pahalgam, known for Kashmiri handicrafts. Woolen shawls, hand-embroidered stoles, saffron, and walnut wood carvings are popular buys. Support local artisans and take home a piece of Kashmir’s vibrant culture with you.
Yes, like many Himalayan glaciers, Kolahoi is also retreating due to climate change. It's visible even over a few years. Visiting responsibly and raising awareness about conservation is one way to support efforts to protect these fragile ecosystems while still enjoying their beauty.
Yes, an inner line permit is required as parts of Kashmir are sensitive zones. If you’re booking through a trek operator, they usually handle the paperwork. Carry a valid government ID (like an Aadhar card or passport) and a few passport-sized photos just in case.
Yes, you can join the trek to Kolahoi Glacier. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
