The Digar La with Nubra and Pangong Tso Trek is a thrilling trip up high in Ladakh that brings together wild mountain paths, deep culture, and jaw-dropping views of the Himalayas. It starts in Leh and takes hikers over the Digar La Pass (5,300 m). This path is less known but stuns with wide looks at the Karakoram Range and Shyok Valley. The way goes by far-off Ladakhi towns like Digar and Ayee, where old ways of life stay mostly clear of today's world. Going over Digar La gets you into the Nubra Valley, often dubbed the "Valley of Flowers" in Ladakh. Here, sand dunes at Hunder, soft Bactrian camels, and the calm Diskit Monastery craft a rare desert-among-mountains feel. From Nubra, the trek heads to Pangong Tso, the famous high lake known for its changing blue colors and wide Himalayan scene. The path is full of changes high passes, green summer fields, bare mountains, and bright waters. The trek needs strong bodies due to its high air, steep climbs, and rough paths. Hikers get peace, clean nature, and true talks with Ladakhi people. It’s great for those who want tough walks and iconic Ladakhi sights, offering a trip of a lifetime across some of the most spellbinding scenes in the Indian Himalayas.
The Digar La with Nubra and Pangong Tso path has deep roots in Ladakh’s past as a hub of old trade, culture, and big politics. Back in time, Digar La was one of many high passes used by locals to link Leh with the rich Nubra Valley and beyond to Central Asia. Before cars could go on roads, these paths were key to moving goods like pashmina wool, salt, barley, and dried fruits. Nubra Valley was on part of the old Silk Route that linked Leh to places like Yarkand and Kashgar in what is now Xinjiang, China. Traders, pilgrims, and caravans would go down into Nubra after crossing paths like Khardung La or Digar La, then move along the Shyok River to the Karakoram Pass. The valley’s key spot also meant it was important for army moves at different times, near places like the Siachen Glacier and the northern edges. In culture, the area is deep in Tibetan Buddhist ways, with spots like Diskit Gompa set up in the 14th century acting as spiritual and lead hubs. These spots held old texts, thangka paintings, and Buddhist talks brought from Tibet. The mark of Buddhism shows in the chortens, mani walls, and prayer flags seen along the trek path.
Pangong Tso, while not near Nubra Valley, shares a past tied with cross-border trade and roaming life. Its salty waters, spreading across India and Tibet, were known to moving herders and traders for ages. Local Changpa nomads moved their yaks and sheep in the nearby fields, living with the tough weather. During the 19th century's Dogra takeover of Ladakh and under the British Raj later, these paths kept their worth as trade lines. In our days, big political shifts have changed how borders work, but the paths stay part of Ladakh’s living past. Today, hiking through Digar La to Nubra and Pangong Tso is more than just a trip; it’s a walk through layers of history, filled with the sounds of traders, monks, and explorers who walked these high paths for many years.
Leh: You’ve got the altitude smacking you at 3,500 meters, so don’t go sprinting anywhere unless you want to pass out. The markets are a riot of colours, with prayer flags flapping everywhere and locals hustling everything from pashminas to apricots. And the monasteries? Hemis, Thiksey, Spituk, they’re old as hell and full of mystery. Leh Palace looms over the town like something out of a fantasy movie, and Shanti Stupa is just well, peaceful, as advertised. Do yourself a favour: chill here for a couple of days, let your lungs figure out the thin air before you try climbing anything higher.
Diskit Monastery: Diskit Monastery sits right in Nubra Valley’s lap, acting like it owns the place (and honestly, it kinda does). This thing’s been around since the 1300s. Perched up high, it’s got the sort of view that makes you wanna write bad poetry or start a travel blog. A giant Maitreya Buddha is staring out over the valley seriously; you can’t miss him. Diskit isn’t just a building; it’s like the spiritual backbone of the whole Nubra area. If you’re into that “finding yourself” stuff, this is the spot.
Hunder Sand Dunes: If you thought deserts needed to be hot, Hunder’s here to mess with your head. Cold desert, snow-capped peaks, and then bam, dunes. It’s like nature got bored and started mixing biomes. And then, just to make it weirder, there are these double-humped Bactrian camels wandering around, leftovers from the old Silk Route days. Camel ride? Yeah, you gotta do it, even if it’s a little touristy. Photographers go nuts here because where else do you get snow and sand in the same frame?
Shyok River: The Shyok River snakes through Nubra Valley, making the place look way more lush than you’d expect in high-altitude Ladakh. The water’s this wild turquoise, winding past poplars and little green fields total eye candy. Back in the day, traders heading for Central Asia would’ve trundled along the riverbanks. Now, it’s mostly trekkers and the odd yak.
Chang La Pass: Chang La is nuts. At 5,360 meters, it’s one of the highest places you can drive over without a helicopter or, I dunno, a strong will to freeze. The views are pure drama ice, jagged rocks, streams that look like they’ve been stolen from a postcard. Anyone heading to Pangong Tso has to brave this pass. It’s a bragging-rights moment, for sure.
Pangong Tso: The lake sits at 4,350 meters and just refuses to be one colour; mornings it’s blue, afternoons it’s greenish, and sometimes it just goes full mirror mode. It sprawls from India into Tibet, so you’re looking at two countries at once. After all the trekking and altitude headaches, just chilling by the water is heavenly. Pop a squat, snap a million photos, and try not to think about the long ride home.
June to August: The Digar La with Nubra and Pangong Tso Trek finds its most popular season in summer.Temperatures during these months are fairly moderate, ranging from 10°C to 20°C during the day, which allows for easy trekking conditions.High passes have no heavy snow; meadows are covered with wildflowers; and Pangong Tso's waters exhibit their most vivid blues.Ladakh is also at its height for tourism, so expect some people at well-known locations including Pangong and Nubra Valley.
September to October: Early autumn offers fewer tourists, beautiful postmonsoon sky clarity, and sharp air. The temperature drops somewhat (5°C to 15°C during the day), but the weather is mostly consistent. Particularly in Nubra Valley, the scenery starts to acquire golden and reddish tones that draw photographers to this paradise. Additionally, an excellent opportunity to escape the major tourist surge while still enjoying readily available hiking trails.
May: late spring: The trekking season starts in late spring. Particularly at Digar La Pass, snow may yet stay on the upper reaches of the path, thereby giving adventure. Daytime highs range from 5 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees Celsius. The streams from melting snow bring the terrain to life, but trekkers should be ready for infrequent freezing winds and chilly nights.
By Airport: Well connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar, Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is the nearest airport. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or make arrangements to arrive at Leh's hotel. Before beginning the trek, acclimatisation requires at least one to two days spent here.
Through Srinagar–Leh Highway: Open from late May to October, the Srinagar–Leh Highway (NH1) offers one of the most beautiful road trips to Leh. With an overnight stop at Kargil, this journey takes roughly two days. You will see famous sites like Zoji La Pass, Drass (the second coldest inhabited area), and Lamayuru Monastery along the way. Gradual acclimatisation calls for this route.
Road from Manali–Leh Highway: Open June through September, the Manali–Leh Highway provides another daring choice. Offering spectacular mountain vistas, the two-day trip travels over high passes like Rohtang, Baralacha La, and Tanglang La. Overnight stops normally are at Sarchu or Keylong.

Digar La stands out for its raw, untouched beauty and lesser crowd compared to Khardung La. While trekking across Digar La (5,300m), you get panoramic views of the Karakoram range and Shyok Valley that feel surreal. It's quieter, more spiritual, and perfect for those seeking solitude in the high Himalayas without sacrificing the adventure.
Yes, Nubra has a distinct cultural vibe. While Leh blends modern tourism with tradition, Nubra feels more ancient and preserved. The villages here, like Sumur and Panamik, carry Tibetan influences, and you’ll see Buddhist monasteries nestled in serene desert backdrops. It’s like stepping into a tranquil time capsule of Ladakhi life.
Mobile connectivity will be limited, especially after crossing Digar La. In Leh and parts of Nubra like Diskit, you may get BSNL or Jio signals. However, Pangong and remote trekking areas often have no service. Use this opportunity to digitally detox and immerse yourself fully in Ladakh’s breathtaking nature.
Absolutely! In homestays and during your stay in Leh or Nubra, you can savor Ladakhi dishes like skyü, thukpa, tingmo, and chutagi. Try butter tea for a traditional experience. Local meals are nourishing and perfect for high-altitude energy. Don’t miss the home-cooked meals at village homes en route.
You'll experience a mix—basic hotels in Leh, traditional homestays in Nubra, and tented camping during the Digar La crossing. The homestays offer warmth, authentic food, and local stories, while camping under starlit skies adds to the adventure. It’s a perfect balance of comfort and wilderness.
Yes! Nubra Valley is known for apricot products, Pashmina shawls, and traditional Ladakhi crafts. You can also find handmade prayer flags, local silver jewelry, and Tibetan-style artifacts. Pangong and Leh markets offer beautiful woolens and organic dry fruits that make for meaningful souvenirs.
While wildlife sightings aren’t guaranteed, you might spot marmots, blue sheep (bharal), golden eagles, and even elusive Himalayan foxes along the trek. Near Pangong and Nubra, migratory birds, especially bar-headed geese and Brahminy ducks, are often seen around water bodies and open skies.
Yes. Leh is usually dry and breezy, while Nubra tends to be warmer during the day and cooler at night. Pangong Lake, at higher elevation, can get very cold after sunset. Weather shifts quickly in Ladakh, so layering your clothing is the best strategy to stay comfortable.
Besides trekking essentials, bring lip balm, sunscreen, moisturizer (Ladakh is dry!), a reusable water bottle, and personal hygiene products. A journal, a good book, and your favorite snacks also help. Comfort is key, especially after long travel days or chilly nights in the highlands.
Yes, the trek includes visits to several stunning monasteries. In Nubra, you’ll explore Diskit Monastery, famous for its large Maitreya Buddha. Nearby Samstanling Monastery in Sumur is peaceful and spiritually enriching. These spots aren’t just scenic—they offer a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Ladakh.
The best time is between June and September, when the weather is clear, the roads are open, and mountain passes like Digar La are accessible. During this time, Pangong Lake is vibrant blue, and Nubra’s landscape comes alive with blooming flowers and greenery.
Yes, you can join the trek to Digar La with Nubra And Pangong Tso. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
