The Chandranahan Lake Trek is a secret spot in the tall Himalayas, hidden in Himachal Pradesh's Pabbar Valley. It mixes pure wild looks with big, tall thrill. Sitting high at around 13,900 feet, this ice lake is loved by locals and seen as holy. The walk sets off from the small Janglik village, near Rohru, and slowly goes up through thick pine and oak woods, green lands, wild flower paths, and falling water. Each step shows amazing views of the snow covered Dhauladhar and Kinnaur mountains, making it great to look at for nature lovers and photo takers. The route itself is kind of hard, fitting for both trekkers who know their stuff and strong newbies. Rivers that must be crossed, high land, and boulders add an adventure touch. A key fun part of the trek is camping in Dayara meadows, a magic place with all-around mountain views and stars at night. Reaching the lake feels dreamy the lake sits in a snow bowl, with rough cliffs and snow fields around it, and is often half ice, even in warm months. This lake gives water to the Pabbar River and means a lot in myths, often visited by people on a holy trip too. The best time to go is from May to October, when you can go and the air feels nice. Trekkers see a mix of high land flowers, some wild animals, and calm alone times, rare in busy trek paths. Whether you want holy peace, big mountain trips, or untouched beauty, Chandranahan Lake Trek gives an unforgettable stays-with-you experience.
Deep in the Pabbar Valley, the Chandranahan Lake is more than just its spot or looks; it also has a rich story and myth background, adding a touch of magic to its hard beauty. Up high at about 13,900 feet, this ice lake has long been seen as holy by the Rohru and Dodra-Kwar's people in Shimla area. History shows the lake was on the old paths of shepherds, known as Gaddis and Gujjars, who move through the high lands with their animals. These folks have loved the lake for ages, seeing it as a heaven gift that keeps life going in these hard lands. To them, the lake is not just water; it's seen as the start of the Pabbar River, which helps with farm work and daily life needs down the valley. In myths, the lake ties to Hindu beliefs, often linked to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Stories tell that the lake is where the Pandavas, the stars of the Mahabharata, stayed in their hiding time. Some think the lake is one of seven holy lakes in the area, and its waters are seen as holy. People from around often walk up Chandranahan to do rituals, pray, and bath in the cold water, thinking it cleans sins and brings gifts from the gods. The name "Chandranahan" means "moon's home" in local talk — showing the lake's dreamy look and holy feel. Some local tales even talk of gods coming to the lake on full moons.
For years, the lake stayed mostly untouched due to its far spot, high spot, and hard reach. Only in the last twenty years did walkers and fun-seekers start to find the Chandranahan route as a less known pick to other Himachal Pradesh paths. Since then, the walk has slowly become liked by nature lovers and photo fans for its untouched charm. Even with more people wanting to see it, Chandranahan Lake has kept its holy feel, with local folks still caring for and keeping its natural space. Old parties and yearly markets still happen in nearby villages to give thanks to the gods thought to live in and around the lake. Now, Chandranahan Lake stands as a sign of old stories, clean nature, and holy worth. Its story is not in books or marks but lives on through spoken stories, local old tales, and the deep love the mountain people have for this magic lake. As more find this hidden spot, there's a growing need to keep its story and holiness for the ones coming after.
Janglik Village: Janglik is the starting place for the lake walk. It is a small, old Himachali place. Here, you can see wooden homes and learn about the area's culture. The village is quiet, with apple trees and forest around it. It is good to see before walking. The charm of old times and kind hearts make it a good start for walkers.
Dayara Meadows: You walk by Dayara Meadows on the way to the lake. It is a big, pretty, open grass area. This spot is used a lot for camping. It has green lands, wild flowers, and wide views of white-topped hills. A great place for taking photos, looking at stars, and enjoying the view.
Pabbar River Valley: This river starts from the Chandranahan ice and moves through the valley. It gives nice views, small streams, and good land for crops. The valley has lots of small places and woods. This makes it a good spot to see how life is there, fish, or just relax by the river.
Dodra and Kwar Villages: These are far places in the valley past Janglik. They are known for their pretty homes and simple ways. Going there lets you see how people live away from big town life.
Rohru: Rohru is the close big place with roads and is on the way to the lake walk. It is famous for its apples, fish in the Pabbar River, and nice weather. It is a good stop for getting used to the area, buying things you might need, or trying food from there before going to Janglik.
Buran Ghati Pass: If you want more adventure, keep going past the lake to Buran Ghati Pass. It is a high and tough walk. It has snow, river moves, and steep ups and downs. It adds beauty and fun for those who like hard walks.
May to June - Spring to Early Summer: One of the best times for this walk. As the snow melts, the land shows green fields, flowers bloom, and small streams move. Days are nice, and nights are a bit cold. The lake might still have some ice, making it look magical. This time is good if you want to see snow and green land together.
July to August - Rain Time (Not the best): It rains a lot then, making the path slippery and easy for the land to move. Rivers get hard to cross, and fog makes it hard to see. This time is not good for walking there.
September to Mid-October - After Rain and Fall: Another good time to visit. The sky is clear, views are sharp, and the air is fresh. The fields look like gold, and the valley has warm fall colours. The path is dry and safer than in rainy weather. Days are nice, nights are cool. This time is perfect for those who love photos and want a peaceful, pretty walk.
November to April - Winter (Not the best): The area is nearly all snow, and paths are closed. The lake is frozen, and camps are deep in snow. This time is too cold for walking without special mountain gear. You should not go unless you are with pros on a winter walk.
By Airport: The nearest plane place is Jubbarhatti Airport in Shimla, about 180 km from Janglik, the start of the walk. From there, you can go by car or bus to Rohru, then Janglik. Flights to Shimla are few but save time if from far places like Delhi or Mumbai.
By Train: The closest rail station is Shimla Rail Station, part of the famous small train path from Kalka. Kalka is well-linked to big cities like Delhi and Chandigarh. After Shimla, go by road to Rohru and then Janglik by car or local drive. It's a nice ride, good for those who love trains and want to see Himachal slowly.
By Road: The lake walk starts at Janglik, which you can get to by road through Rohru. From Shimla (about 150 km), take a private car or local bus to Rohru. From there, Janglik is 30–40 km more. The roads are okay to the village. The way has twists in the mountains, so it's best to go in the daytime.
