The Chadar Trek, a top winter trek in India, takes you over the icy Zanskar River in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. This trek is known for its strange, pretty look and very cold weather. It gives a one-time chance for those who love adventure. "Chadar" means "sheet" in Hindi, named after the ice sheet over the river in deep winter. It goes for about 62 km and takes 6–9 days. The trek is not only walking on ice but also living in very cold weather as low as –25°C. You go by high rocks, ice falls, and small cuts in the land, seeing great views of Ladakh in winter. At night, you sleep in caves or tents by the river, which makes the time both hard and great. The trip starts in Leh, where trekkers get used to the high altitude before they go to the start, at places like Shingra Koma or Tilad Do. Along the path, trekkers see great natural sights, how Zanskari villagers live in winter, and untouched wild places. The Chadar Trek needs you to be fit, strong-minded, and to have the right clothes and gear. Even though it is hard, it is a must-do for those who seek thrills from all over the world, mixing nature, culture, and the thrill of walking on a frozen river. With changes in climate hitting the area, the trek’s future is not certain, which makes it even more special for those wanting to see this rare sight.
The Chadar Trek is more than a sport; today, it has deep history and culture from the Zanskari people's past. For hundreds of years, the icy Zanskar River was key to the cut-off Zanskar Valley, which stays shut from the world for almost half the year because snow blocks the mountain ways. Before roads, the only way villagers could go to Leh in winter was by the ice river, which was like a natural road. This trip was key for trade, health needs, and getting supplies. The ice way was called the "Chadar" as it looked like a big white cover on the river. This trip took days, and people, mostly traders and villagers, would take goods like butter, wool, salt, and meat to Leh. They would bring back needed things like flour, rice, and tea. Since it was very cold, people used wool clothes, fur-lined boots, and yak-skin bags to stay warm. Nights were spent in caves on the way, which are still used by trekkers today.
Over time, the Chadar path became more than a need; it turned into a cultural trip. Travellers shared tales, sang songs, and shared knowledge on how to move on the ice, find safe ways, and respect the river’s wild side. In the late 20th century, the Chadar Trek started to draw explorers and tourists looking for a unique challenge and great beauty. Trekkers from all over came to walk on a frozen river with high Himalayan rocks around. But now the trek faces risks from climate change and new roads. Warmer winters and odd weather make the ice thin and less safe in some parts, cutting down the trek time. Roads connecting Zanskar to Leh also cut the need for the ice path. Even with these changes, the Chadar Trek remains a strong show of guts, adventure, and culture. For the Zanskari people, it reminds them of their past people’s smart use of what they had in one of the toughest weathers on Earth. For today’s trekkers, it is a rare chance to walk in history, in a frozen world that may not last.
Leh: Leh is the main spot to start the Chadar Trek, full of life as the capital of Ladakh and a centre of Tibetan-Buddhist ways. Before the trek starts, hikers stay here a few days to get used to the air. Leh has amazing spots like Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, lively markets with local crafts, and wide views of snowy peaks. The old Leh Palace and Shanti Stupa are key visits for those who love the area's deep past.
Zanskar Valley: Zanskar Valley is a hard-to-reach area in India, known for its bold views and old monasteries. In summer, you can get there by high mountain paths, but in winter, the Chadar path is the main way from Leh. Places like Padum show how the Zanskari people live with old ways and kind hearts.
Magnetic Hill: About 30 km from Leh, Magnetic Hill pulls in tourists because it makes cars seem to roll uphill on their own. Set in a beautiful area, it’s a cool spot to check out in Ladakh.
Gurudwara Pathar Sahib: This dear Sikh holy place sits on the road from Leh to Kargil and is loved for its holy value and the tale of Guru Nanak visiting Ladakh. The calm vibe and the kindness of those who run it offer a restful break for those passing by.
Sangam Point: Sangam Point is where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet, showing a mix of green and brown water colours. In winter, the icy river scene here is stunning and often seen before or after the trek.
January – Mid February: Best Frozen Time: The best time for the Chadar Trek is early January to mid-February when the Zanskar River turns into solid ice. At this time, it gets very cold, from -10°C to -25°C, making the ice safe to walk on. The views are unreal, with icy falls, icicles, and snow-covered cliffs making a dreamy winter place.
Mid February – Late February: End of Season: From mid to late February, the ice gets thinner as it warms up. Walking is still doable early on, but ice cracks and water spots pop up more, raising risks. Yet, the place still looks great, and it's not as cold as in early January.
Avoid Other Months: The Chadar Trek is only for winter, not past February. From March, the ice melts fast, and the river flows again. In warmer months, the river’s for rafting and can't be walked on. Trying the trek outside the safe months can be unsafe.
By Airport: The easiest way to reach the start of the Chadar Trek is to fly to Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL), linked well to big Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. Flights are often in winter, but sometimes the weather can delay them. From Leh, hikers usually take 2–3 days to get used to the highland before heading to the trek's start at Shingra Koma or Tilad Do.
By Road: Though Leh can be reached by the Srinagar–Leh or Manali–Leh roads in summer, both are closed in winter due to lots of snow. So, road travel isn’t a choice in the Chadar Trek months, leaving flying as the only good way.
Local Ride from Leh to Trek Start Point: From Leh, hikers can hire taxis or join tours that give a ride to where the trek begins. The road trip shows off lovely winter views of Ladakh’s rough scenes and stops by cool spots like Sangam Point and Magnetic Hill before hitting the icy river start.

The Chadar Trek isn't just a winter hike—it's a cultural passage. As you move along the frozen Zanskar River, you meet locals who rely on this icy route for trade and travel. Their resilience and lifestyle in such extreme climates offer a rare cultural lens that most treks can’t provide.
Yes, definitely. The Chadar Trek takes you through traditional Zanskari villages where you can witness local customs, meet friendly villagers, and learn how they’ve adapted to sub-zero life. These interactions often happen at rest stops or homestays and provide a rich, immersive cultural experience.
You’ll be served hot, freshly prepared vegetarian meals daily. Expect comforting Indian dishes like dal, rice, roti, and sabzi. Some camps also offer soups, snacks, and herbal tea to help beat the cold. The meals are simple but energizing—ideal for the high-energy demands of trekking in freezing temperatures.
Electronics drain faster in cold temperatures. Keep phones, cameras, and power banks wrapped in woolen socks or inside your sleeping bag. Lithium batteries especially need extra care. Carry zip-lock bags and silica gel to protect from condensation and avoid direct exposure to freezing winds.
Absolutely! Chadar is one of the most photogenic winter treks. The frozen river, icicles, and snow-covered cliffs make every frame postcard-worthy. Just be sure to protect your gear from moisture and cold. A good DSLR or action cam with extra batteries is highly recommended.
Layering is key. Start with thermal base layers, followed by fleece and an insulated outer jacket. Waterproof gloves, woolen socks, and a neck gaiter or balaclava are essential. A pair of gumboots with wool insoles works best for walking on ice. Avoid cotton—it absorbs sweat and increases cold exposure.
Yes, Leh has several shops that rent and sell winter trekking gear. From snow boots and thermal wear to sleeping bags and trekking poles, you'll find all essentials here. This is especially helpful if you don’t want to invest in high-end gear for a one-time trek.
Accommodation is typically in tented camps. You'll sleep in double or triple-sharing insulated tents with thick sleeping bags and foam mats for warmth. In Leh, you'll stay in guesthouses or hotels with heating and basic comforts to help you prepare and recover from the cold.
The Zanskar region is rich in Buddhist culture. While the trek route is remote, it does connect you to monasteries in Leh and nearby areas. Exploring these places before or after your trek can offer a deeply spiritual dimension to your Himalayan journey.
Read up on the terrain, watch documentaries, and practice mindfulness. Cold environments can be mentally taxing, so knowing what to expect helps. Stay calm in discomfort, embrace the challenge, and remember: the Chadar Trek is as much a test of spirit as it is of stamina.
The dry, cold air can chap your lips and skin. Use heavy moisturizers, petroleum jelly, and lip balm regularly. Sunscreen is also essential, as UV rays are intense at high altitudes—even in winter. Hydration is key, so keep drinking warm fluids throughout the trek.
Yes, you can join the trek to Chadar. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
