The Nanemachi Waterfall is a sight for sore eyes carved by nature into one of the mystical horrors of Majha Maharashtra. Hidden deep in the forests of Raigad district, the site has allure for various kinds of adventure seekers, trekking enthusiasts, and nature lovers due to its breathtaking beauty, pristine aura, and exciting trekking path. The waterfall gushes from an enormous height into a mesmerizing pool surrounded by blue-green foliage and towering cliffs. When you see the clear water rushing down into a naturally beguiled lay-back area, it becomes a tranquil stretch for all of them seeking peace along nature's gentle folds.
In comparison to other famous waterfalls of Maharashtra, the Nanemachi Waterfall remains irregularly untouched, thus serving as a perfect hidden escape route for many wanting to shed the ordeal of big cities. By the time trekkers get to the waterfall, they will have experienced a rather adventurous route combing in and out of dense forest, rocky terrains, and muddy trails. This picturesque route provides breathtaking viewpoints to take in the earth's calmly flaunting beauty in all its raw glory. The utter Olympic cover in the woodlands is the cherry on top; birds chirping around, the freshness of the damp earth, and a cool breeze are a treat to their expedition.
It is located in the state of Maharashtra; therefore, Nanemachi Waterfall is easily reachable by large cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Ratnagiri. Some significant towns around the Nanemachi Waterfall are:
Mumbai (Approx. 210 km): The financial capital of India and one of the busiest cities, Mumbai serves as a major hub for tourists heading towards the Nanemachi Waterfall. By road, it takes around 5-6 hours to travel from Mumbai to the waterfall.
Pune (Approx. 160 km): It was entirely another major city to reach Nanemachi Waterfall, known as Maharashtra's cultural capital, Pune. The drive from Pune takes about 4-5 hours.
Ratnagiri (Approx. 80 km): Ratnagiri has a location on the Konkan coast and is very close to Nanemachi waterfall. Travelling from the western coastal belt into Ratnagiri gets to the waterfall approximately in 2-3 hours.
Mangaon (Approx. 40 km): This small town in Raigad serves as the nearest point with available public transport. Visit Mangaon by train or bus to tourists. They could hire private transport from Mangaon to the waterfall.
Nanemachi Waterfall can be reached using different modes of transport. Some of the transport can be used to reach here:
Road: It is the best option to arrive at Nanemachi Waterfall by travelling on the road. The area has good connectivity by state highways and national highways, thus making this place easily accessible by public and private transport.
From Mumbai: Take the Mumbai–Goa Highway (NH66) and drive toward Mangaon. From Mangaon, a diversion leads towards Mahad and further smaller roads lead to Nanemachi Waterfall. Cab hiring or taking a private vehicle is the best option.
From Pune: By Tamhini Ghat Road or Pune–Mumbai Expressway, travelers will be able to catch a road toward Mangaon and then finally to Mahad, before hitting Tarzan to reach Nanemachi Waterfall.
From Ratnagiri: For Ratnagiri travellers, NH66 is to be tracked towards Mangaon. At this juncture, travellers can find internal roads to lead them to the waterfall. Public options will also have buses run by the state and private operators offering bus services to Mangaon or Mahad from Mumbai, Pune, and Ratnagiri. From there, local jeeps or cabs can be hired to reach the nearest drop-off point before trekking.
By Rail: Mangaon Railway Station is the nearest railway station to Nanemachi Waterfall and is well-connected with Mumbai, Pune and other major cities through the Konkan Railway Network. From Mangaon, tourists can hire private taxis or local jeeps to reach the base village near Nanemachi Waterfall.
From Mumbai: Numerous trains run on the Konkan Railway and stop at Mangaon. Travellers can take any of these trains like Konkan Kanya Express, Mandovi Express, etc. to reach Mangaon.
From Pune: From Pune, tourists can avail of trains Pune Ernakulam Express or Pune Madgaon Express and reach Mangaon.
From Ratnagiri: Railway trains from Ratnagiri to Mangaon are present in high frequency since both are very well associated along the Konkan Railway line. As soon as tourists arrive at Mangaon Railway Station, they will have to manage their arrangements for a taxi or shared jeep for the close distance towards the trekking route.
By Trekking Route: Adventure seekers wanting to reach this waterfall will get a thrill out of it. The trek to the waterfall is about 4-5 kilometres from the nearest village which is either Vaijanath or Mahad. The trek is quite moderate and may require certain fitness levels due to the varied terrain, river crossings, and some dense patches of forests. The duration of the walk will take about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the waterfall. During heavy monsoons with rainfall, this trekking path looks a lot more spellbinding with its extreme greenery. This is recommended not to trek alone because it confuses first-time visitors without a local guide.
Visit to the waterfall is appreciated at any point between June and October and after rainfalls, during the post-monsoon season, for it is at these times that the waterfall is full of gush with flowing water, colourful greenery, and thereby an enthralling environment.
During the rainy season (June-September): The rain falls so heavily during the season of the monsoons that the waterfall becomes a mesmerizing scene. The whole area looks so green and the view is stunning. The trek during this period proves challenging but rewarding to all trekkers and adventurers. However, caution should be exercised as the trails are generally extremely slippery, and the current of the river is very strong.
Post Monsoon (October-November): This assures a good flow of water, still up to the grandeur of its visit. The climatic conditions are quite stable, and the lack of rain encourages trekking during October and November. The forest surrounding the area remains green and alive, contributing an excellent habitat for photography. This is the ideal time for photography and walking with nature without fear of intense rainfalls.
Avoid Summer and Winter: Low water levels at the waterfall and extremely hot conditions make summer months from March to May uneventful visits. Winter (December to February) has pleasant weather, but without the sufficiency of a full-flowing, the visit does not pay off.
Last Minute Recommendations to Travelers
Bring the Necessities: Waterproof gear, trekking shoes, snacks, and a considerable amount of drinking water.
Group Travel: It is rather safer and more prudent to go trekking through these thick forests.
Engage a Guide: Local guides help in navigating via the best routes paying attention to safety.
Wake Up Early: The journey should start by early dawn at most to enjoy the waterfall's splendour.
Respect Nature: Do not litter, keep it clean, and be respectful to the local ecosystem. Nanemachi Waterfall is a peaceful and untouched scenic beauty that has to be seen by those who love nature and who are interested in trekking. The visit promises to be a mesmerizing experience since this waterfall can be reached through road, rail or adventurous trek.
The Nanemachi Waterfall trek is not very long, but it has its share of challenges, especially during the rainy season. Some important safety tips guarantee you find yourself having an enjoyable trek:
Proper trekking shoes. The very fact that the path can be slippery and muddy calls for the recommendation of a sturdy pair of anti-slip shoes with good grip.
Leave early in the morning. This gives you a good amount of daylight for the trek and your timely return before it gets dark.
Take enough water and snacks with you. Although it is shady under the forest cover, high humidity can cause dehydration.
Avoid trekking alone. Trek in groups, or with a guide familiar with the route.
Use caution at river crossings. The current may become swift; pay attention when crossing streams.
Respect nature and wildlife. Avoid littering; do not disturb the natural habitat of flora and fauna.
Check the weather forecast. Heavy rains can make trails blissfully slippery; therefore, plan your trek with good weather in mind.
Waterproof bag. For instance, place your phone and camera in a waterproof container to avoid rain or splashes.
When is the best time? This, of course, depends on various factors: taste, activity planned, and what the weather looks like at that very time. Each season has its own experience; hence, an understanding of variations in that domain would lay out a decision for a potential tourist. Broadly speaking, there are three seasons--summer, monsoon, and winter--which can each claim their attractions and challenges. Summer extends from March to June in a generalized description; with rising temperatures and dry weather gripping most parts of the country. For this reason, in the plains and coastal areas, the mercury might go up to more than 40°C (104°F), making it sometimes extremely uncomfortable to stay outdoors.
Those tourists seeking cooler climes flock to hill stations such as Manali, Darjeeling, and Ooty, where summer activities are provided. Travelers are likely to experience hot days and warm nights with little or no rain in summer. Light and breathable clothing, including sunglasses and sun hats, are essential, and good sunscreen to protect against heat stroke and sunburn. Even so, constant hydration is the key, for dehydration and heat exhaustion are common in regions of high temperature.
This is the time of heavy rainfall and humidity in the monsoon season from June to July not even once does the country fail to receive a good drench here. Well-renovated greenish looks along with all the grateful charm of waterfalls pouring extra mist over the top of the hills greet the country at this hour. Munnar, Cherrapunji, and Lonavala look like paradise in the monsoon. However, the season also poses a few demerits-waterlogging, landslides in hills, and heavy downpours disrupting journeys. Sometimes this humidity can come down upon the coastal side and feel like a ton-on-your-head burden; unglamorous waterproofs like clothes or full-length rubber coats, umbrellas, and other fast-drying materials should come to the rescue. As far as the footgear is concerned, more important are shoes that give a grip against wetlands; with that in mind, just taking some kind of insect repellent this time will be very necessary since stagnant water supports the breeding of these pesky creatures. Winter, I wish to add from October to February the period considered stress-free for travel in India. Most other parts see chill air going down, hovering around 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F), while some further north might witness sub-zero readings blanketed with snow. The cold weather is ideal for adventure sports skiing, trekking, or camping in places like Auli, Gulmarg, and Himachal Pradesh.
Predictably and understandably, Rajasthan, Goa, and Kerala witnessed a slowly but steadily increasing influx of tourists basically due to pleasant weather. Mornings in the north are always a bit frosty and cool; nights from this moment turn misty. Hence, layered clothing, thermals, gloves, and warm jackets in cold regions need to be carried, whereas light woollens should suffice in milder winters. A good moisturizer to protect against dry weather would do you well along with a layer of lip balm. Every month has a different climate. March to May-peak summer-are best for high-altitude destinations, possibly a bit uncomfortable for explorations down in the lowlands. June to August is the monsoon peak, adding an ensemble of greenery but requires planning to avoid disruptions. September to November, balancing between the end of monsoon to the onset of winter, exhibit greener vistas paired with a tang of chilly air. December to February is best for all activities associated with winter and sightseeing, thus being the most preferred season for the maximum crush of tourists. And whatever the season, a wise traveller should follow local weather updates, keep packing accordingly, and take every measure towards a comfortable journey. Knowledge of these seasonal variations would allow every traveller to enjoy their sojourn to the fullest while preparing for different weather scenarios.
Konkan Region in Maharashtra is a picturesque coastline embraced by nature, framed by hills and calm beaches, ancient forts, and gracious waterfalls. Thus, nature can show off her beauty in full in this way, with the Western Ghats on one hand and the Arabian Sea on the contrary. A lot of travellers with multiple interests will be attracted to the astonishing beauty of nature, lush hills, tranquil beaches, ancient forts, and majestic waterfalls-which together create an artist's palette.
Lingmala Falls: Lingmala Falls is almost a two-tier spectacle, most beautiful on the view of the waterfalls. Visiting these waterfalls while they are full during the monsoon when they get engulfed inside dengue and lush greenery is the most enjoyable experience.
Dudhsagar Waterfall: Technically, Dudhsagar Waterfall is located in Goa. However, most of the tourists enjoying it come from the Konkan area. It has four steps that make this waterfall one of the highest in India and by every sight itself, it seems like a stream of flowing milk.
Savdav Waterfalls: Savdav Waterfalls near Kankavli is very much an offbeat gem in the dense jungle. The cool, serene pool that nature has formed underneath the waterfall is said to soothe the senses and refresh one.
Pandavkada Waterfalls: The Pandavkada Waterfall, 101 m high, is a very popular tourist spot in Navi Mumbai and is surrounded by intensely green hills. Some historical indications suggest that this place used to be visited by the Pandavas of the Mahabharata.
Konkan is a rough and charming land, dotted with opportunities for trekking. From the verdant hills to ancient forts, these trekking sites balance two rival ends: offering adventure-seekers a challenging experience while pampering them over cool spots.
Rajmachi Fort Trek: This is an extremely popular trek from Lonavala across dense forests and picturesque trails, leading to breathtaking views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges. The fort possesses a lot of historical significance, it was under the rule of the Marathas, and afterwards, the British.
Kalsubai Peak Trek: The highest peak in Maharashtra at 1646 m above sea level, Kalsubai poses a test to reach the top, but those who do are rewarded with a spectacular view of the whole surrounding range of mountains and valleys. The Kalsubai temple adds a holy dimension to this peak.
Trek of Harihar Fort: Hewn into stone, the very steep, exciting, and thrilling ascent leading to the Harihar Fort is one of the best treks in the Western Ghats. This great height point, which is a triangular hilltop, is scintillating with its view and its climb of the surroundings.
Vasota Fort Trek: Trekking towards Vasota Fort inside Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is filled again with unlimited charm. It offers one of the best views over adjoining forests, rivers, and valleys. Short boat rides across the Koyna backwaters are also part of this adventure.
Sudhagad Fort Trek: Yet another less-traversed route, Sudhagad Fort would prove to be a pleasant diversion from Rajmachi or Lohagad which is fast filling up with trekking crowds. The sights have it: dense forest walks and spectacular views from above.
