Hidden within the depths of the Sahyadri hill range of Maharashtra is Andharban Jungle, a thrill-seeker's and nature lover's delight. "Andharban" literally means "Dark Forest" in Marathi, an appropriate name for the dense, foggy jungle that remains cool and shaded even at midday. Famous for its greens, waterfalls, and valley views, Andharban is a trek that one will never forget. Whereas all other treks are a climb to the top, Andharban is a descend trek that will allow you to explore the green forests, and streams and traverse above the scenic Kundalika Valley. Monsoon trekkers and winter trekkers all adore this trek greatly to see nature in its purest and original state.
Andharban Jungle is located close to Pimpri village in Tamhini Ghat of Maharashtra, approximately 70 km from Pune and approximately 150 km from Mumbai. Because of its proximity to urban cities, it's a readily accessible weekend trekking spot. The nearest railway station is Lonavala from where a taxi or local bus can be taken to the trekking spot. If one is travelling from Pune, the way is towards Mulshi Dam and then towards the base village. Transport here is not satisfactory, so taking a private taxi on rent or going as part of an organized trek would be the best idea to reach Andharban.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Andharban Jungle is during the rains in the monsoons (June to September) and early winter months (October to February). The monsoons make the jungle a fairyland of vegetation with waterfalls cascading down, foggy trails, and a pleasant climate, and it's a fairy trek. But one has to take precautions because the paths are slippery during rain. Winter offers a cosy and settled trekking experience with blue sky, and the valley is easily visible. March to May Summers are extremely dry and hot, and the climb is not so comfortable as there is no water source and the sun is extremely harsh.
The entry fee has been initiated by the Maharashtra Forest Department for the ecological balance of Andharban. The cost of entry is around ₹100 per person and can be higher based on government policies and regulations. Other than that, the trekkers will also need to have a permit given by the forest department before proceeding with the trek. The permits can either be obtained mostly online or at the entrance of Pimpri village. The permits are reserved by the licensed trekking agencies, so the tourists need not do much. It is also preferable that one does what the authorities instruct them to do, i.e., do not litter, handle wildlife with care, and do not spoil the natural beauty of the place. Andharban Jungle is an ideal destination for adventure lovers who love to immerse themselves in the serenity of nature and experience a refreshing trek in the unknown and dense jungle. Whether you are an amateur or expert trekker, this trek is a fantasy land experience that remains in your soul even when you leave its magical trails.
Pimpri Village to Bhira Dam trek is an adrenaline rush journey through the harsh terrain of the Western Ghats, offering an electrifying mix of adventure, nature, and spine-tingling tests. The trek stands out for its tough to demanding path, which offers a spine-tingling experience to experienced trekking groups as well as adventure sports persons seeking a demanding test of endurance. The walk is 15–18 kilometres long depending on the route of the journey, and 6–8 hours is the mean duration. That might vary depending on the level of the trekker's pace, nature conditions, and preparedness level. The walk begins at Pimpri Village, which is an interior village of the Sahyadri Hills. The location has stunningly pretty views of valley greens, chattering brooks, and rugged boulders. The journey is easy during the first half, with rising slopes and carefully laid tracks amid dense forests and grasslands.
As the trekking party progresses further, the narrow trails, rocky terrain, and physically demanding climbs challenge physical endurance and the strength of the mind. There is a dense cover on the route that has profuse flora and fauna, and hence it is nature enthusiasts' heaven. Trekkers mostly have the opportunity to witness exotic birds, reptiles, and occasional views of wildlife. The most challenging aspect of the trek is climbing the slippery stretches and sloping upslopes, especially during the rainy season. Rain transforms the trek into an exciting but tiring trail, with waterfalls cascading down and foggy hills offering an element of adventure. The trail ranges from muddy ground to boulder ascents, requiring a firm grip and careful walking. Trekkers have to walk carefully on mapped-out routes so that they don't lose their path in the thick forest. The scenic beauty of the area apart, each step is worth it. As the trek is near its end, walking down towards Bhira Dam is initiated.
The terrain here too is uneven with steep falls putting trekkers' strength to test. The peaceful atmosphere of the valley and dam gives the trekkers their inspiration, which pumps them up to trek even after they are tired. Bhira Dam marks the endpoint of trekking, where there is a peaceful reservoir that is famous for crystal clear water and peaceful scenery. The area is the most laid-back place where the trekkers relax, rest, and take pictures of nature's marvels peacefully. Most of them also stop over here for refreshment on their return journey to their respective places. Best to be done in the post-monsoon season (September to February) when the climate is nice and the paths are comparatively safe.
Monsoon trekking is beautiful but dangerous with a possibility of landslides and slippery paths. Ample water, high-energy snacks, rain clothing (trekking during monsoon months), and adequate trekking shoes for a strong grip need to be carried. A local guide would be helpful for beginner trekkers to navigate the difficult parts of the trek easily. Overall, the Pimpri Village to Bhira Dam trek is an adventure experience, nature's wonders, and a satisfying challenge. Be it adrenaline-filled ascents or the tranquillity of unspoiled vistas, the trek has for you a lifetime memory through the innocence of Sahyadris' beauty.
The Tamhini Ghat trek is a breathtaking drive on nature's most exquisite landscapes, and there are numerous scenic spots that every visitor would love. Here are ten such attractions to be appreciated. The most wonderful aspect of the trail is maybe the presence of numerous waterfalls and streams that emerge, especially during the monsoon. As one treks along the trail, the soothing sound of cascading water greets one, filling the atmosphere with serenity. These waterfalls, from small streams to strong torrents, add to the grandeur of the dense forests and rock outcrops. Certain waterfalls like the famous Devkund Waterfall create secluded natural pools which trekkers can wade into refreshing waters. The small streams running parallel to the trek also add magic, their crystal-clear waters glistening under the sunlight. Crossing these gentle streams barefoot, feeling the cool water rush past, becomes a delightful part of the trek. As the trail ascends, it leads to spectacular viewpoints that offer breathtaking vistas of Tamhini Ghat.
The vast expanse of lush greenery, rolling hills, and mist-covered peaks create a picture-perfect scene. These viewpoints serve as excellent resting spots where trekkers can pause and soak in the beauty of their atmosphere. Sunshine and shade at sunrise and sunset bring the landscape to a fairy fare, valleys below bathed in golden light. Several of the lookouts give a panorama of the entire spread with some suggestion of the range of the Western Ghats. The passing clouds inside the valleys and here and there towering above in the rainbow add to these lookouts the dreamland beauty. On a clear day, one can even spot distant forts and villages hidden among the hills. One of the most stunning areas on the trail is the Kundalika Valley, a precipitous and green landscape that offers the unadorned splendour of nature. The valley formed by the Kundalika River is bounded by rugged cliffs covered with thick cover. This place is specifically renowned for sports like river rafting and thus a haunt for this kind of traveller.
Kundalika River, which originates from the Tamhini Ghat, quietly and smoothly winds its way down the valley, with its water shining in the sunlight. Forests densely line the banks of the river, teeming with flora and fauna. The peaceful landscape of the valley, with occasional calls of birds and leaves chanting, is a paradise for nature admirers. Every visitor spends a little time sitting on the bank of the river, listening to the gentle murmur of water and basking in the tranquillity of the surrounding area. Overall, the natural view on the route of trekking makes it a place that enthusiasts of trekking and nature lovers would not be able to resist. Whether it is the cascading waterfalls, the beautiful scenery, or the magnificence of Kundalika Valley and Kundalika River, each section of the trail is a special and unforgettable experience. Not only does the trek give us a chance to experience nature in its best form, but it also gives us a chance to feel isolated and revitalized, thereby making it the ideal retreat for adventure seekers and relaxed people alike amidst untouched wilderness.
Adventure sport lovers who are looking for an adrenaline rush outdoor activity would find trekking, hiking, photography, nature walks, and camping to be the most suitable activities for the reward since they are in nature and doing physically as well as mentally demanding activities. Trekking and hiking are extremely popular adventure tourism activities and are the finest combinations of physical activity, beauty of scenery, and contact with the wild. Whether a day's hike across rolling hills, a moderately strenuous climb through dense forests, or a tough multi-day walk through knotty mountains, they are all paths that hold unparalleled promise for discovery and self-discovery. Trekking is walking long hours on trails which in most instances take one over inaccessible pieces of land where nature's grandeur remains free from the stroke of urban civilisation. In contrast, hiking tends to be the standard term employed for short, fixed routes that are trekked over a day and represent the best option for visitors who have minimal in way of preparation. Each sport possesses the complete health benefit of strengthening cardiovascular fitness, boosting mindset, and credibility through each step closer to the peak or destination.
All the trekking and hiking trails pass through breathtaking scenery from dense forests that are home to diverse wildlife to alpine meadows teeming with wildflowers, waterfalls, and towering mountains whose aerial scenery leaves tourists speechless. These breathtaking sceneries offer a golden opportunity for photo ops and nature-hiking tours, which allow tourists to freeze and capture moments that will remain etched in memory forever. Nature photographers particularly adore such spots, where every turn on the road reveals a vista, ranging from light passing through valleys with mist at dawn to the unobstructed evening sky with stars over a serene camp. Nature enthusiasts also enjoy mountain hiking and trekking trails as the best way to photograph the unguarded moments of birds, animals, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
Nature photography is an art that requires patience since the attractiveness of a location should be realized through the potential to comprehend light, composition, and timing. Besides photography, nature discovery is also a component of any hiking or trekking experience since it will enable the tourists to relish the atmosphere, learn about different ecosystems, and become sensitized towards the native flora and fauna. These trekking routes go through conserved national parks and game reserves where the visitors catch a glimpse of the rare and exceptional fauna and flora, which encourages more enthusiasm to conserve nature and diversity. The observation of the delicate balance of ecosystems, ranging from tiny insects to massive carnivores, gives rise to a profound sense of regard for nature. For additional exposure, guided tours by ecologists and wildlife specialists will provide keen observations regarding the geology, geography, and culture of the region.
Eco-tourism is followed by most climbers and trekkers engaging in conservation work, as well as environmentally sound touring practices, to tread as lightly as possible on fragile ecosystems. By evening on the highway, dozens of travellers long for the silence and fellowship of camping in the open spaces, where they can rest under an arch of starry light and exchange stories by the light of spitting fire. Camping is the best way of abandoning the frippery of the times and adopting nature's simple fashion, wallowing in freedom and autonomy. Tent camping, cooking over a campfire, and sleeping out in the open sky above allow for experiences closer to nature and closer to other people. Camping way back in the woods, alongside a quiet lake, or under huge mountains, the experience is enhanced by nature all around and the natural sounds of leaves through far-off howls of nighttime critters.
Every campsite offers some other adventure activity such as rock climbing, rappelling, river rafting, or night hikes with guides so that the camper has maximum time spent on adventure activities. The adventure feel and tranquillity of a secluded campsite offer the right blend of thrills and rest. For the luxury camper, there is also glamorous camping available that provides an upper-class but still back-to-nature way of experiencing the great outdoors with fully appointed tents, gourmet cuisine, and other amenities that balance adventure and convenience. Regardless of the comfort level sought, camping provides more immersion in nature and relief from the confines of tension in everyday life.
As the fireflies of the blaze fade low and the night sets in, the campers lie peacefully unaware of the night music of nature as their lullaby, waking up refreshed and ready to spend another day of adventure. The combination of trekking, hiking, photography, nature exploration, and camping provides a perfect experience of adventure, wherein one can push their physical limits, witness the scenic beauty, capture their odysseys in the form of photographs, and feel the serenity of out-of-doors. Whether one goes on an individual trek for introspection, joins a group trek to experience together, or plans a family camping expedition to unveil nature's splendour to those near and dear, all these offer boundless opportunities for adventure seekers of every kind. The call of the wild is too great, beckoning human beings out of the chaos of city life into the very heart of nature, where every step is to marvel and every breath a second to cherish.
Tamhini Ghat is a stunning mountain pass on the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, famous for its green valleys, waterfalls, and misty hills. It lies along the stretch of Pune to Konkan, a spot of adventure sports and a haven for nature lovers and nature walkers. Tamhini Ghat is the place to be in the monsoons when the entire area is an emerald paradise of cascading waterfalls flowing down rock slopes and clouds resting upon it. The ghat has a beautiful view of the valleys that surround it and is a photographers' paradise and a serene destination. Few trekking routes begin at Tamhini Ghat, which receives trekking enthusiasts from all parts of Maharashtra. The region is bio-diverse with different species of birds, butterflies, and orchids. As a serene retreat from urban living, Tamhini Ghat is the right destination.

The dam is surrounded by scenic hills and thick forests and has been a favourite destination for weekend outing of tourists for years, seeking a serene outing. The Periphery of Mulshi Dam is an ideal place for picnics, camping, and photography. The peaceful wind and serene surroundings make it a perfect place for a weekend getaway. Adventure tourists have ample trekking routes around Mulshi that lead them to the nearby forts and viewpoints. Devkund Waterfall is a secret paradise from the dense forests of villages that surround Bhira. It is one of the few plunge waterfalls in Maharashtra, where water drops directly into a natural blue pool. It is a trekker's paradise since one has to go through a moderate 4-5 kilometre trek through dense forests, river streams, and stone roads to arrive at Devkund. The trek to the waterfall is as beautiful as the destination itself, with tremendous views of the vegetation and sighting wildlife here and there.
