Ulsoor Lake , also called  Halasuru Lake, is one of the biggest lakes in Bangalore. It derives its name from its locality, namely, Halasuru, close to M G Road. It is spread over 50 ha (123.6 acres) and has several islands. Even though the lake dates back to Kempe Gowdas's time, the present lake was created by Lewin Bentham Bowring, the then Commissioner of Bangalore. A part of the lake is controlled by the Madras Engineer Group, and the rest by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike(BBMP) 

The Eastern watch tower on Ulsoor Lake had a Chinese bell about 4'3" in height and 3'1.5" in diameter. The bell was struck on the hour, day and night, and the sound was heard for up to 3 miles. It cracked on being stuck with a 12lb shot one rainy night, making it useless, after which it was dismounted and given to Mr Smith, the Waterworks engineer, to be placed at the Tower. Interestingly, Ulsoor Lake has an interesting historical legend associated with its name. It is believed that the area where the present-day lake is situated was once covered in a thicket of forests. One fine day, Kempe Gowda, a ruler of the Vijayanagar Empire, was travelling through the place and was rendered exhausted. He took shelter under a tree, the same tree under which Mandava Rishi worshipped God Someswara. The Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him about a hidden treasure. When Kempe Gowda woke up from his slumber, he dug up the treasure and, using the riched, he built the Someswara Pagoda. He created Ulsoor Lake in the process.
