WHAT ARE THE THREE RIVERS IN TRIVENI SANGAM:

"Sangama" is the confluence of 3 holy rivers Kaveri River, Lokapavani River & Hemavati River. It is in Srirangapatna, Mandya. It is also said that the confluence 'Sangama' cannot be Hemavathi because Hemavathi joins Kaveri just before Krishnaraja Sagar dam, much before Srirangapattana. The three rivers can only be  Lokapaavani, Dakshina Kaveri and Uttara Kaveri.

WHERE DOES TRIVENI SANGAMA MEET:

  • Triveni Sangam meets in Srirangapatana , which gives a beautiful scene. Sangams in India commemorates the confluences of two or more rivers.

STORY/HISTORY OF TRIVENI SANGAMA:

triveni sangama

This beautiful multi-disciplinary trail takes one to Triveni Sangam in the beautiful city of Srirangapatana. Sangams in India commemorates the confluences of two or more rivers. In this case, three holy rivers come together: the Kaveri River, Hemavati River, and Lokapavani River. These sangams are believed to be auspicious, and according to legends, bathing in the waters of Sangam removes any sins. Apart from the auspicious nature of Sangam, this location is also lovely. The trail begins from William Baillie Memorial, accessible via various modes of transport such as buses, taxis, cabs, or even private vehicles.

To my knowledge, the third river joining at the Sangama confluence cannot be Hemavathi because Hemavathi joins Kaveri just before Krishnaraja Sagar dam, much before Srirangapattana. The three rivers can only be

  1. Lokapaavani

  2. Dakshina Kaveri and

  3. Uttara Kaveri.

Kaveri splits into two a couple of kilometres before Srirangapattana. Both branches flow almost parallel to each other a few kilometres apart and rejoin at the Sangama. Just before this, Lokapaavani joins the Uttara Kaveri branch near the Nimishamba temple. The above edit just now added is by Sirimane Nagaraj, a journalist and social activist based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The Kaveri River is mainly believed to be sacred. Many temples in her name have been made. It is also believed that in Hinduism, immersing the ashes and offering prayer will provide moksha to the dead. The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were also immersed here. You could also wash off your sins by dipping at Paschima Vahini, where Cauvery takes a turn to the west, or simply watching the lazy river at Dodda Ghosai Ghat. Before you venture out for swimming, be aware that some spots with their whirlpools could be pretty dangerous.

Kaveri river also passes through Nimishamba temple, An incarnation of Goddess Parvathi; Nimishamba is so called because she is believed to solve the problems of her devotees, especially long-pending marriage issues, within one minute. Raja Wodeyar constructed the temple after he captured Srirangapatna from the Vijayanagar Empire. River Cauvery also hosts an impressive bridge supported by various stone pillars. Built-in 1804 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar under the supervision of Diwan Purnaiah in honour of Lord Wellesley, the then governor-general, the bridge, though now in a dilapidated condition, has withstood the ravage of floods for over a century

THERE ARE THREE ISLANDS:

  1. Sporangia Patna,

  2. Shivanasamudra (both in Karnataka),

  3. Srirangam (in Tamil Nadu).

LOCATION/ HOW TO REACH:

triveni sangama

Although situated only 15 km (9.3 mi) from Mysore city, Srirangapatna lies in the neighbouring district of Mandya. The entire town is enclosed by the Kaveri River, which forms a river island, the northern half of which is shown in the adjacent image. While the main river flows on the island's eastern side, the Paschima Vaahini segment of the same river flows to its west. The town is easily accessible by train from Bengaluru and Mysore and well-connected by road, just off the Bangalore-Mysore National Highway 275. The highway passes through this town, and special care was taken to minimize any impact on the monuments
